Retired ophthalmologist Gordon Leitch ran into a snag during his campaign for governor of Oregon when the state would not accept his $20 gold pieces to pay his candidate filing fee.Leitch believes gold and silver coins are the only legitimate forms of legal tender, with paper money and checks constituting fraud on the part of government. His campaign promises include a 30-percent discount on taxes paid in those precious metals. The office of Oregon’s Secretary of State declined Leitch’s $100 filing fee on the grounds that no bank would accept the coins for deposit. In February, Leitch refiled and provided a candidacy statement to be placed in the election pamphlet that the state will distribute to voters. He paid the $1,000 fee for placement in the pamphlet with 1,000 U.S. silver dollars, which were reported to be worth nearly $9,000.... http://www.numismaticnews.net censor News |

Russia warns against threatening Iran |
A top Kremlin diplomat warned against threatening Iran with sanctions or the use of force, saying that would only aggravate the international standoff over Tehran's suspect nuclear program, Russian media reports said Saturday. Rather than getting Iran to stop uranium enrichment, a tougher stance could result in Tehran's total refusal to cooperate with the UN deputy director of the Foreign Ministry's Middle East and North Africa Department, according to ITAR-Tass. "We firmly stand today for resolving the problems in and around Tehran diplomatically rather than militarily. Increasing international pressure on Iran has no prospects," Ozerov was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency. The United States and European allies are pushing for sanctions because of Iran's refusal to suspend its enrichment program, as demanded by the UN Security Council. They suspect Iran is trying to develop atomic weapons in violation of its treaty commitments... http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2006-04-22-iran-uranium_x.htm
