Israeli Prime Minister-elect Ehud Olmert can build a coalition that will back his plan to withdraw from the West Bank even though his own Kadima Party won fewer votes than expected, lawmakers said. Olmert, whose party won just 28 of the Knesset's 120 seats in yesterday's election, can muster a two-thirds majority by negotiating with the Labor Party and three or four other potential coalition partners, said Haim Ramon, one of three members of parliament who left the Labor Party to join Kadima. Labor came second with 20 seats. ``We're talking about a dramatic change in our political life,'' Ramon said in an interview with Israel Radio today. ``It's a big victory for Olmert who courageously presented a detailed political program. We have the ability to form a coalition with 80 seats.'' ... http://quote.bloomberg.com censor News |

FAA investigates third close call on O'Hare runways |
Federal officials are investigating a possible safety breach involving two commercial planes at O'Hare International Airport, the third investigation of an apparent close call on the airfield's runways in less than a week. Federal Aviation Administration officials said Tuesday that they are trying to determine whether two planes that were preparing for takeoff on Sunday got closer than allowed under federal rules. An Airbus A320 plane had been cleared for takeoff at around 12:20 p.m. but was told to abort its takeoff four seconds later because another plane had been readying for takeoff on an intersecting runway, the FAA said. ... http://www.usatoday.com/travel/flights/2006-03-29-ohare-safety_x.htm

Fed raises key rate, hints it's not done yet |
Federal Reserve policymakers boosted interest rates Tuesday for a 15th straight time to the highest level in five years and suggested a 16th rise may be in the cards. In his first meeting as Fed chairman, Ben Bernanke and his colleagues unanimously voted to raise their target for short-term interest rates a quarter percentage point to 4.75% in their bid to thwart inflation. That's the highest since March 2001, but still far below the recent peak of 6.5%. in mid-2000. In their post-meeting statement, Fed policymakers said the economy "rebounded strongly" after a slowdown at the end of last year, which they attributed to "temporary or special factors." Fed officials said economic growth would likely "moderate" to a healthy pace later this year. But they said a tight job market, in tandem with elevated energy prices and a high usage of available resources "have the potential" to stoke inflation. Therefore, the Fed officials repeated that "some further policy firming may be needed," ... http://www.usatoday.com/money/economy/fed/rates/2006-03-28-quarter-hike_x.htm

Former Muslim who faced death penalty is in Italy, Berlusconi says |
An Afghan Christian convert who had faced the death penalty for abandoning Islam has arrived in Italy where he has been granted asylum, Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi said Wednesday. Abdul Rahman’s departure happened as Afghanistan’s parliament demanded that the government prevent him from leaving the country. Italy has close ties with Afghanistan, whose former king, Mohammed Zaher Shah, was allowed to live with his family in exile in Rome for 30 years. The former royals returned to Kabul after the fall of the Taliban regime in 2001. Rahman was released from prison Monday after a court dropped charges of apostasy against him because of a lack of evidence and suspicions he may be mentally ill. His whereabouts are unknown but he likely is still in the country. ... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12063255/from/RSS/

Nigeria Arrests, Deports Liberia's Ex-Leader Taylor |
The Nigerian government deported former Liberian president Charles Taylor, who's been indicted on war crimes charges, after arresting him as he attempted to flee the West African nation where he's been in exile for the past three years. Taylor, 58, was detained as he tried to leave Nigeria at the northeastern border town of Gamboru. A jet carrying him to Liberia's capital, Monrovia, left the northern city of Maiduguri about 2:00 p.m. local time, police spokesman Haz Iwendi said. Taylor vanished from his villa in the southeastern city of Calabar on March 27, two days after Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo said Liberia was free to take him ``into custody.'' News of the disappearance sparked criticism from U.S. lawmakers such as Vermont Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy, who called for the cancellation of President George W. Bush's meeting today with Obasanjo. ... http://quote.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000087&sid=a07I6EyDF2ik&refer=home
