A ruptured gasoline pipeline burst into flames Tuesday as scavengers collected the fuel, killing at least 260 people and injuring dozens of others, the Red Cross said.Scores of bodies could be seen jumbled and fused together in the raging flames at the blast site. Intense heat kept rescue workers back as smoke billowed over the heavily populated Abule Egba neighborhood.Witnesses said professional thieves broke into the pipeline after midnight and hundreds of men, women and children rushed in later to scoop up the fuel with jerry cans, plastic buckets and bags. It was unclear what ignited the gasoline."This was a preventable tragedy," said Joel Ogundere, whose home was next to the blast. "It was poverty, ignorance and greed," said the lawyer, who didn't give his age.Nigerian Red Cross workers had documented 260 dead and 60 other people under treatment at local hospitals after the fire, senior Nigerian Red Cross official Ige Oladimeji said.... http://www.foxnews.com censor News |

Judge: Saddam To Be Hanged Within 30 Days Appeals Court Upholds Death Sentence For Former Iraqi Leader |
Iraq's highest appeals court on Tuesday upheld Saddam Hussein's death sentence and said he must be hanged within 30 days for the killing of 148 Shiites in the central city of Dujail. The sentence "must be implemented within 30 days," chief judge Aref Shahin said. "From tomorrow, any day could be the day of implementation." On Nov. 5, an Iraqi court sentenced Saddam to the gallows for ordering the 1982 killings following an attempt on his life. Under Iraqi law, the appeals court decision must be ratified by President Jalal Talabani and Iraq's two vice presidents. Talabani opposes the death penalty but has in the past deputized a vice president to sign an execution order on his behalf — a substitute that was legally accepted. ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/12/26/iraq/main2296436.shtml?source=RSSattr=World_2296436

Troop 'surge' (Escalation) plan for Iraq meets growing opposition in US |
Opposition to a proposal to send additional American troops to Iraq grew stronger in the US over the Christmas weekend as Bush pondered new ways to stabilize the country sinking deeper into sectarian strife. Bush discussed his options with new Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and other senior security officials at his Camp David retreat in Maryland on Saturday. They change the word Escalation that they used during the Viet Nam to Surge. Conveniently, the main media has a short memory. So how many soldiers are we willing to let them sacrifice to save their own rotten Political Asses? Over 55.000 died in Viet Nam and hundreds of thousands maimed for life, are we going to let them get away with it again? Remember the Golf of Tonkin excuse that got us into Viet Nam was also a Lie. Time we arrest them all for War Crimes and maybe the habit of lying us into wars will stop. If we don’t it will happen again... http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20061225/wl_mideast_afp/usiraqmilitary_061225164134

Troops celebrate white Afghan Christmas |
U.S. and NATO soldiers at bases in Bagram and Kabul woke up to a white Christmas as more than 6 inches of snow fell in central Afghanistan by midday Monday. Soldiers wearing red Santa hats and even a couple dressed as elves walked around Camp Eggers — the main U.S. base in Kabul — entertaining troops, some of whom were packing fresh snowballs and launching them at each other. "The white Christmas definitely makes me feel at home, actually," said Navy Master Chief Ozzie Nelson, who now lives in San Diego with his wife and five kids but spent winters growing up in the Rochester, N.Y., area. More than 50 soldiers attended a Christmas-day church service at Eggers, where they sang traditional Christmas hymns. "Most of us would rather be home," said Maj. Andrew Harewood, the U.S. Army chaplain leading the service. "It's not that we're unpatriotic, but there's something about this time of year that makes us want to be with family."... http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2006-12-25-afghan-troops_x.htm?csp=34
