Mexico’s leftist presidential candidate said Thursday that he would never recognize the results of the election he said he lost by fraud, and Catholic bishops called for a week of prayer to heal the divisions widened by the bitter dispute. Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador implied that the country could plunge into instability if courts don’t order a vote-by-vote recount. His supporters demonstrated outside an airline in the latest in a series of blockades and protests. Lopez Obrador lost the July 2 election to conservative ruling-party candidate Felipe Calderon by less than 0.6 percent, according to official vote tallies. He has called for a manual recount of all ballots and a campaign of civil disobedience. “The election for me is illegitimate,” Lopez Obrador said in a radio interview. “I am not going to recognize the results of a fraudulent election.” ... http://www.msnbc.msn.com censor News |

U.S. opposes Venezuela bid for U.N. council seat |
The United States is lobbying hard to block Venezuela's bid for a seat on the U.N. Security Council, fearful that Hugo Chavez, its fiercely anti-American president, will disrupt the body as it confronts hot issues such as Iran and Sudan. But interviews with some 15 diplomats of member states reveal substantial wariness about the U.S. effort, with the critics warning it could boomerang against the U.S. choice, Guatemala, when the General Assembly votes in October.A European diplomat, refusing to be identified further, saying he didn't want to anger the Americans, said lobbying against Venezuela would only gain it votes.... http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/americas/07/20/venezuela.un.ap/index.html?section=cnn_world

Sharp rise in Baghdad violence reported |
Bombings and shootings soared by 40% in the Baghdad area in the past week, the U.S. military said Thursday. An American general said extremists were preparing "an all-out assault" on the capital in a decisive battle for the future of Iraq.Iraq's most influential Shiite cleric issued his strongest call yet for an end to Shiite-Sunni bloodletting, urging all Iraqis to wake up to the "danger threatening the future of the country" and stand "side-by-side against it."U.S. military spokesman Maj. Gen. William Caldwell said there had been an average of 34 attacks a day involving U.S. and Iraqi forces in and around the capital since Friday — up sharply from the daily average of 24 registered between June 14 and July 13."We have not witnessed the reduction in violence one would have hoped for in a perfect world," Caldwell told reporters. Bush’s German back rub magnified on YouTube Popular Web site documents embarrassing moments for world leaders |
An impromptu back rub that President Bush gave German Chancellor Angela Merkel is now massaging millions of funnybones.A 5-second video and series of photographs recently posted on YouTube.com and various blogs show Bush surprising Merkel at the G-8 summit by quickly rubbing the back of her neck and shoulders. 'Why is there not a murmur of protest from Washington?' |
Outside the cavernous US government-run holding centre in Nicosia, Mohammed Shami shook his head. "I feel embarrassed to be an American. They have given Israel the green light to destroy Lebanon. What they are doing is wrong; it is immoral." Mr Shami, who is of Lebanese-American descent, arrived here with 1,000 fellow Americans early yesterday, part of the exodus to Cyprus expected to reach more than 80,000 people fleeing the ferocity of the conflict in Lebanon. For Mr Shami and others from the successful and settled Lebanese community in the US the relief at escaping the violence is mixed with deep feelings of anger and guilt at the actions of their government."My father is of Lebanese birth and my mother is American", said Mr Shami, a 21-year-old student from Michigan. " I am very proud of my mother and the American people. All I can say is that most American people are not like Condoleezza Rice, they are not like George Bush; they have a sense of decency."... http://news.independent.co.uk/world/middle_east/article1188890.ece

Judge rules against Bush in spying lawsuit Administration argues defending case threatens to reveal state secrets. Its not much of a secret that they use this excuse to cover their asses |
A federal judge Thursday refused to dismiss a lawsuit challenging the Bush administration’s domestic spying program, rejecting government claims that allowing the case to go forward could expose state secrets and jeopardize the war on terror. U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker said the warrantless eavesdropping has been so widely reported that there appears to be no danger of spilling secrets. Dozens of lawsuits alleging that telecommunications companies and the government are illegally intercepting Americans’ communications without warrants have been filed. This is the first time a judge has ruled on the government’s claim of a “state secrets privilege.” The only State Secret they wanted to keep is that they are a bunch of Idiots, and that is not a secret they could keep... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13958508/
