Mexican police are investigating the killing of three men who were found with notes pinned to their bodies carrying threats to local authorities. Investigators in the northern state of Nuevo Leon believe two victims found there were killed by drug cartels. Two more bodies were also found in the southern state of Quintana Roo - one of them carried a note. President Felipe Calderon has been sending thousands of troops to several Mexican regions to tackle drug cartels. In Nuevo Leon, Governor Natividad Gonzalez said security measures for local officials would be stepped up. More than 30 people have died this year in the state in violence believed to be drug-related. At least seven deaths in Quintana Roo have been linked to drug cartels. The latest victims were found on the outskirts of Cancun - their hands and feet were tied and their heads covered with tape. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk censor News |

U.N. rights envoy likens Israeli actions to apartheid |
A United Nations human rights envoy on Thursday likened Israeli treatment of Palestinians in occupied territory to apartheid, and said its settlement policy amounted to colonialism.South African lawyer John Dugard warned Western states they would never rally support among developing nations for effective action against perceived abuses in Sudan's Darfur, Zimbabwe and Myanmar unless they tackled the plight of Palestinians. "This places in danger the whole international human rights enterprise," he told the Council, a Geneva-based watchdog. Dugard, special rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, said restrictions on movement and separate residential areas gave a sense of "deja vu" to anyone with experience of apartheid. "Of course there are similarities between the OPT (Occupied Palestinian Territory) and apartheid South Africa," he told the U.N. Human Rights Council. ... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=2973508

"DVD Dogs" Moved To Safe House Malaysian Officials Get Tip There's A Contract On 2 Labs Who Sniffed Out 1 Million Illegal DVDs |
Lucky and Flo, the two Labradors who helped sniff out nearly 1 million illegal discs last week within days of joining Malaysia's anti-piracy effort, have been moved to a safe house, a news report said Thursday. The New Straits Times reported that a source had tipped off officials about a bounty offered for killing the sniffer dogs, who are on loan for a month from the Motion Picture Association of America. The amount was not disclosed. "The dogs are a genuine threat to the pirated disc syndicates, thus the instruction to eliminate them," Firdaus Zakaria, the enforcement director of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, was quoted as saying. He did not elaborate on the information received by the ministry. Firdaus and senior ministry officials could not be immediately reached for further details on the report. Settlers make Hebron 'unbearable' |
Israel's deputy prime minister has said the presence of Jewish settlers inside the West Bank city of Hebron has created an "unbearable situation". Shimon Peres' comments come a day after settlers took over a building in Hebron, claiming to have bought it. A local Palestinian family has disputed this claim saying they had purchased the property. Mr Peres said that the settlers should be evicted if it is proved that they have acted unlawfully. A large Israeli force of police & soldiers is surrounding the 3-storey building after large numbers of settlers moved in late Monday. The building is located near a road called Worshiper's Way, linking the nearby settlement of Kiryat Arba to the Tomb of the Patriarchs, a site holy to both Muslims & Jews. Mr Peres said of the settlement of Kiryat Arba on the outskirts of Hebron had been built so that a Jewish community would be living alongside, rather than within, a Palestinian community. "It is very hard to have both at the same time," he said... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6470375.stm

Bolton admits Lebanon truce block |
A former top American diplomat says the US deliberately resisted calls for a immediate ceasefire during the conflict in Lebanon in the summer of 2006. Former ambassador to the UN John Bolton told the BBC that before any ceasefire Washington wanted Israel to eliminate Hezbollah's military capability. Mr Bolton said an early ceasefire would have been "dangerous and misguided". He said the US decided to join efforts to end the conflict only when it was clear Israel's campaign wasn't working. The former envoy, who stepped down in December 2006, was interviewed for a BBC radio documentary, The Summer War in Lebanon, to be broadcast in April. Mr Bolton said the US was deeply disappointed at Israel's failure to remove the threat from Hezbollah and the subsequent lack of any attempt to disarm its forces. Britain joined the US in refusing to call for an immediate ceasefire. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6479377.stm

Researchers Conclude When It Comes to Looks, Justice Isn't Blind |
When it comes to crime, it pays to be good looking.Researchers at Bath Spa University in England came to that conclusion after conducting a courtroom experiment that asked jurors to pass judgment on a fake mugging case.Half of the 96 participants were given a picture of an attractive suspect, the others received one of a supposedly ugly defendant. The case report was the same in either case. The volunteer "jurors" then were asked to decide whether the suspect was innocent or guilty. In the latter case they also had to decide on a sentence.Analysis of the results revealed that attractive suspects were more likely to be acquitted, despite there being no extra evidence in their favor.... http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,260440,00.html
