Fights broke out in a Los Angeles-area prison on Wednesday, injuring 19 inmates in the latest violence since a race riot that erupted at a nearby jail over the past weekend claimed the life of one man. The fighting at Pitchess Detention Center-East between black and Latino inmates took place in four separate dormitories and involved more than 450 inmates, but the four fights were stopped in about an hour, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.A Sheriff's Department spokesman told reporters outside the prison that one inmate suffered a head injury and was taken to local hospital. Congress 'made Wikipedia changes' |
Online reference site Wikipedia blames US Congress staff for partisan changes to a number of political biographies. Computers traced to Capitol Hill removed unpalatable facts from articles on senators, while other entries were "vandalised", the site said. An inquiry was launched after staff for Democratic representative Marty Meehan admitted polishing his biography. Wikipedia is produced by readers who add entries and edit any page, and has become a widely-used reference tool. Using the public history of edits on Wikipedia, researchers collected the internet protocol numbers of computers linked to the US Senate and tracked the changes made to online pages. The site lists half a dozen prominent biographies that had been changed by Senate computers, including those of Minnesota Senator Norm Coleman, Florida Senator Dianne Feinstein and Senator Tom Harkin of Iowa. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4695376.stm

Torino Police Brace For Protests |
Fast-changing events, including regional protests and the surge of rioting across the Muslim world, have complicated the task of protecting the Winter Games. The host city's police chief still believes security plans are flexible and thorough enough to avert serious problems. "Our plan, which has been in preparation for many years, took into account the possible emergence of new problems," Rodolfo Poli said in an interview at his office Wednesday with The Associated Press. "We're policemen, not altar boys," he added. "We always think more pessimistically than what happens in reality." Poli, a veteran of Italy's long-running battle against domestic terrorist groups such as the Red Brigades, said authorities are bracing for attempts by leftist and anti-globalization protesters to ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/02/08/sportsline/main1298921.shtml?CMP=OTC-RSSFeed&source=RSS&attr=World_1298921
