Three U.S. soldiers were killed Sun when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb northwest of the capital, raising to 8 the number of Americans killed this weekend in Baghdad area. More than 20 Iraqis also died in other violence Sun, including 7 who were killed in 3 explosions that occurred just outside the heavily guarded Green Zone in Baghdad, not far from Iraq's Defense Ministry. The violence occurred one day after Iraq's parliament met inside the Green Zone to elect top government officials in a breakthrough in a long political standoff. U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad repeated his call Sun for the quick creation of a Cabinet comprising "competent" ministers "who will work for all Iraqis and bring Iraqis together." Prime Minister-designate Jawad al-Maliki has 30 days to assemble a national unity government of Shiite, Sunni Arab and Kurdish parties that U.S. and Iraqi officials hope can stem sectarian violence that has swelled over the past months during a stalemate over the government... http://www.usatoday.com censor News |

Officials mum on huge U.S. Embassy |
The fortresslike compound rising beside the Tigris River here will be the world's largest of its kind, the size of Vatican City, with the population of a small town, its own defense force, self-contained power and water, and a precarious perch at the heart of Iraq's turbulent future. The new U.S. Embassy also seems as cloaked in secrecy as the ministate in Rome. "We can't talk about it, security reasons," Roberta Rossi, a spokeswoman at the current embassy, said when asked for information about the project. A British tabloid told readers that even the location was being kept secret, but the news would surprise Baghdadis who for months have watched the forest of construction cranes at work across the winding Tigris, at the very center of their city and within easy mortar range of anti-U.S. forces in the capital, though fewer explode there these days. The embassy complex 21 buildings on 104 acres, ... http://www.washingtontimes.com/world/20060423-122454-5409r.htm

West is on crusade - 'Bin Laden' |
The West's moves to isolate the new Hamas-led Palestinian government prove it is at war with Islam, a tape attributed to Osama Bin Laden declares. The tape also described the situation in Iraq and Sudan's troubled Darfur region as further evidence that a "Zionist-crusader war" was being waged. The recording was broadcast by Arab satellite TV al-Jazeera on Sunday. If confirmed, it is the first message from Bin Laden since January 2006, when he threatened more attacks on the US. The authenticity of the tape has yet to be independently verified. The speaker on the tape said that along with their governments, the people of the West bear responsibility for what he called a "Zionist-crusader war against Islam". ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/4936284.stm

Iraqi President Concerned Over Turkish and Iranian Troop Concentrations on the Border |
President Jalal Talabani expressed his concern Sunday over reported Iranian and Turkish troop concentrations on those countries' borders with Iraq. Turkey has moved thousands of troops to the border region in what its military said was an offensive against Turkish Kurd guerrillas. Iran also reportedly has moved forces to the border, and last week shelled a mountainous region inside Iraq used by Iranian Kurd fighters for infiltration into Iran, according to Iraqi Kurd officials. No casualties were reported from Friday's artillery and rocket barrage. Talabani said that so far Iranian and Turkish forces have stayed on their sides of the border. ... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=1880178

Swedish authorities puzzled by man found floating on raft at sea |
Swedish authorities Saturday were investigating how a man calling himself a "stateless American" ended up floating on a raft of oil barrels and wood planks in the waters between Denmark and Norway. The man — who carried no identification, spoke perfect English and said his name was George Williams was found by a Norwegian oil tanker on Fri morning, floating in the Skagerak sea on a raft of four oil barrels held together by a frame of wooden planks. He told police he had been thrown from a ship several days earlier and now wanted to go to New York, but offered little further information. He asked to be taken in by Swedish authorities, and shielded his face from photographers when he was taken to a port in southern Sweden. "If he was thrown off a ship, they must have thrown off the raft for him to sit on as well, so I don't know," Swedish marine police spokesman Bengt Albinsson said. "We are trying to figure out the circumstances, but we will have to see how much he wants to tell us."... http://www.usatoday.com/news/offbeat/2006-04-23-raftman_x.htm

Shoot-out at Palestinian ministry |
Bodyguards of the Hamas health minister and gunmen suspected to be linked to Fatah have exchanged fire at the health ministry in Gaza City. Three people were injured in the confrontation. It seems the gunmen were seeking better treatment for a hospital patient, a BBC correspondent says. Although it appears this was not a political matter, the clash comes at a time of heightened tension in Gaza. On Saturday there were clashes between rival supporters of Hamas and Fatah. Several people were hurt in those clashes. Talks continued late into the night on Saturday, from which representatives of the two parties emerged to say that they were determined to calm the situation. People inside the health ministry on Sunday said the gunmen were linked to one of the military wings of the Fatah party. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4936302.stm
