Staffers at a school for the emotionally disturbed conducted their own investigation of a 13-year-old girl's rape and even tried to collect evidence before reporting the attack, a police chief said Tuesday."I'm not certain it's criminal but it's certainly not advisable," said Mount Pleasant police Chief Louis Alagno. "They should be calling, notifying the police and calling in the professionals."He said the school delayed calling police for nearly four hours after the Monday night attack at the Hawthorne-Cedar Knolls School in Hawthorne, about 25 miles north of New York City. Three teenage boys were arrested and charged as adults. The Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services, which operates the school, issued a statement saying it was investigating the incident and cooperating with police, but did not address the allegation of the delayed call. It said it would not discuss individual children.... http://www.foxnews.com censor News |

Special comment: Condi goes too far Olbermann: Secretary Rice’s comparison of Saddam to Hitler is not accurate |
On "Fox News Sunday" Feb. 25, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice paralleled World War II with the state of Iraq when discussing what would happen if Congress were to revise the Iraq authorization: We already know about her suggestion that the president could just ignore whatever congressional Democrats do about Iraq. We know how that game always turns out. Ask President Nixon. Ask President Andrew Johnson. Or ask Vice President Dick Cheney, who utterly contradicted Secretary Rice on Monday when he warned President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan about what those mean congressional Democrats could do to his foreign aid. All of this, par for the course. But about what the secretary said regarding the prospect of Congress’ revising or repealing the 2002 authorization of the war in Iraq: Here we go again! From springs spent trying to link Saddam Hussein to 9/11, to summers of cynically manipulated intelligence, through autumns of false patriotism, to winters of war, we have had ... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17351284/

US intelligence chief predicts worse violence in Iraq |
The United States director of national intelligence, Mike McConnell, is warning the violence in Iraq may get much worse.Admiral McConnell has told the Senate's armed services committee that sectarian violence in Iraq has become self-sustaining. "The current security and political trends in Iraq are moving in a negative direction, particularly after the February 2006 bombing of the Mosque at Samara," he said. He said the latest US intelligence estimate paints a grim picture of the future. "Unless efforts to reverse these conditions gain real traction during the 12 to 18-month time frame of this estimate, we assess that the security situation will continue to deteriorate at a rate comparable to the latter half of 2006," he said. Admiral McConnell says the violence would only get much worse if US troops were to leave. The bleak security outlook came as the US agreed to take part in a regional conference to discuss ways of ending the violence in iraq. ... http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200702/s1858915.htm

Group: Gore a Hypocrite Over Power Bill Conservative Group Says Gore's Tenn. Mansion Uses Too Much Electricty, Calls Him a Hypocrite |
EGore a leading voice in the fight against global warming, is being called a hypocrite by a conservative group that claims his Nashville mansion uses too much electricity. Gore's film "An Inconvenient Truth" won an Oscar on Sun for chronicling his campaign against global warming. The next day, the Tennessee Center for Policy Research put out a news release saying Gore was not doing enough to reduce his own consumption of electricity. "We wanted to see if he was living by his own recommendations & walking the walk," said Drew Johnson, president of the think tank that pushes for conservative economic issues. Utility records show the Gore family paid an average monthly electric bill of about $1,200 last year for its 10,000-square foot home. The Gores used about 191,000 kilowatt-hours in 2006, according to bills reviewed by The AP spanning the period from Feb. 3, 2006, to Jan. 5. That is far more than the typical Nashville household, which uses about 15,600 kilowatt-hours per year.... http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=2909396

Confusion over report of 18 Iraqi boys killed in park |
State television reported that 18 boys were killed when a car bomb exploded in a park in Ramadi, and Iraqi and international officials were quick to deplore the slaughter. But questions about key details of the report emerged just as quickly. Iraqi police and state TV said the attack occurred Tuesday. Later, police said it happened Monday. The confusion grew deeper following an announcement by U.S. forces that 30 civilians and one Iraqi soldier were injured by flying debris Tuesday when troops intentionally detonated 15 bags of explosives found in Ramadi. Some of the wounded were treated at a U.S. aid station, and others were flown to a military hospital for treatment, the statement said. None of the injuries were life threatening, it added. The news first broke after nightfall when it is too dangerous for local journalists to independently check the reports in Ramadi, a Sunni insurgent stronghold 110 kilometers (70 miles) west of Baghdad. ... http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/iraq/2007-02-27-iraq-violence_x.htm?csp=34

European research goes for gold |
Europe has a new flagship agency to fund the brightest ideas in science. The European Research Council (ERC) has been given a budget of 7.5bn euros (£5bn) to 2013, and will focus solely on fundamental, or "blue skies", study. It is hoped the initiative can find the breakthrough thinking - and eventually new products and services - to keep the EU's economy globally competitive. The ERC was formally inaugurated at a meeting in Berlin attended by the German Chancellor, Dr Angela Merkel. She said the Council would become "a champion's league for research", giving scientists the freedom to be creative and innovative. "We know that research and new technologies can be driving motors for a new economic dynamic, they can even provide a basis for growth in Europe, for keeping and increasing our prosperity and competitiveness," she observed. "We expect those who work in the research areas selected by the ERC will fulfil their potential." ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/6399157.stm
