Chips push through nano-barrier |
The next milestone in the relentless pursuit of smaller, higher performance microchips has been unveiled. Chip-maker Intel has announced that it will start manufacturing processors using transistors just 45 nanometres (billionths of a metre) wide. Shrinking the basic building blocks of microchips will make them faster and more efficient. Computer giant IBM has also signalled its intention to start production of chips using the tiny components. "Big Blue", which developed the transistor technology with partners Toshiba, Sony and AMD, intends to incorporate them into its chips in 2008. Intel said it would start commercial fabrication of processors at three factories later this year. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6299147.stm

World trade talks set to restart |
Trade ministers from some 30 countries have agreed to resume the Doha talks to liberalise global trade. However the ministers' statement was short on specifics and its wording revealed that they have not really moved much closer to reaching a deal. Pascal Lamy, director general of the World Trade Organization, said the Doha round was "living, it will continue". Leaders of developed and industrialised nations had both warned that a failure of the talks would be "catastrophic". The talks at the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, have been seen as one of the last chances to make a decisive move to revive the Doha round before the fast-track authority of US President George Bush runs out in July. After that deadline US Congress could block key parts of any trade deal, which would then scupper the treaty. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/6304907.stm

But Bush, who unveiled his plan in his State of the Union address on Tuesday, said that he has spoken to some Senate Democrats who seemed willing to open discussions. "While some members gave a reflexive partisan response, I was encouraged that others welcomed this opportunity to reach across the aisle," Bush said in his weekly radio address. ... http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=2828650

Bush assertive on Iraq strategy |
Bush has made it clear he will ignore any attempt by the US Congress to question his sending 20,000 extra troops to Iraq. Mr Bush - who faces tough opposition in Washington to his new Iraq strategy - said he was the decision-maker and would not rethink his plans. He spoke after the Senate unanimously backed Lt Gen David Petraeus as the new US commander in Iraq. Meanwhile House Speaker Nancy Pelosi arrived in Iraq on a surprise visit. Ms Pelosi, a Democrat and vocal critic of Mr Bush's plan to send more troops, held talks with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki. Mr Maliki assured Ms Pelosi that Iraq intended "to assume security missions currently handled by US-led forces in Iraq", a statement from the prime minister's office said. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/6303277.stm

Hospice Helps Dying Man Lose His Virginity |
Thanks to a church-run hospice, one disabled man was granted his dying wish: to lose his virginity. 22-year-old Nick Wallis, who has muscular dystrophy, had hoped to experience sex before he died. After telling staff at the Douglas House hospice in Oxford of his wish, they decided to help him, reported London's Daily Telegraph. Wallis had hoped to form a relationship through which to experience sex, but it just never happened. "I had hoped to form a relationship when I went to university, but it didn't happen. I had to recognize that if was to experience sex I would have to pay for it out of my savings. My mind was made up before I discussed it with anyone else," Wallis said. "I found an advert from a sex worker in a magazine for the disabled," Wallis said. "The initial contact was by email and then by phone."... http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,247458,00.html
