North Korea threatened Thursday to use a delay in international nuclear disarmament talks to bolster its military "deterrent force," a phrase it often uses to refer to its purported atomic weapons. North Korea has said it has nuclear weapons, although the claim has not been verified independently. "It's not bad that the resumption of nuclear talks is delayed. During that period, we will make more deterrent force," the North's top nuclear envoy, Kim Kye Gwan, told a news conference. "We will react in an ultra hard-line manner if the United States continues to apply pressure and sanctions. We will never yield to pressure," Kim said. ... http://abcnews.go.com censor News |

White House Decries Report on Iraqi Trailers |
The Bush administration yesterday denounced a Washington Post report that questioned the handling of postwar intelligence on alleged Iraqi biological weapons labs. A White House spokesman acknowledged that President Bush's assertions about the suspected labs were in error but said this was caused by flawed intelligence work rather than an effort to mislead. The Post reported yesterday that a Pentagon-appointed team of technical experts had strongly rejected the weapons claim in a field report sent to the Defense Intelligence Agency on May 27, 2003. That report, and an authoritative, 122-page final report by the same team three weeks later, concluded that the trailers were not biological weapons labs. Also the Brits told Bush right off the bat that they sold those trailers to Iraq and what they were, and they had nothing to do with "biological laboratories" in any way. However, Bush ignored it and kept insisting they were "biological laboratories.” Is that just a minor error?... http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/04/12/AR2006041201789_pf.html

U.S. Death Toll in Iraq This Month Hits 35 |
Four more American soldiers were killed in Iraq, the U.S. military said as the U.S. death toll for the month surpassed the total for all of March. More than 40 Iraqis also died, including at least 22 in a car bombing near a Shiite mosque northeast of Baghdad. Meanwhile Wednesday, key Shiite politicians cast doubt on a plan to convene parliament next week, saying they still have not decided whether to replace their candidate for prime minister to break a deadlock over forming a new government.Parliament Speaker Adnan Pachachi, a Sunni Arab, said at a nationally televised press conference that he would call parliament into session Monday to push forward efforts to form a new government, which have been snarled for weeks over who will serve as prime minister."It is my duty to the Iraqi people in order to preserve the credibility of the democratic process," Pachachi said.... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060412/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq

How the Gospel of Judas Emerged |
When the National Geographic Society announced to great fanfare last week that it had gained access to a 1,700-year-old document known as the Gospel of Judas, it described how a deteriorating manuscript, unearthed in Egypt three decades ago, had made its way through the shady alleys of the antiquities market to a safe-deposit box on Long Island and eventually to a Swiss art dealer who "rescued" it from obscurity. But there is even more to the story. The art dealer was detained several years ago in an unrelated Italian antiquities smuggling investigation. And after she failed to profit from the sale of the gospel in the private market, she struck a deal with a foundation run by her lawyer that would let her make about as much as she would have made on that sale, or more. Later, the National Geographic Society paid the foundation to restore the manuscript and bought the rights to the text and the story about the discovery. ... http://www.nytimes.com/2006/04/13/science/13judas.html?ex=1302580800&en=c956beacb0945048&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss
