HILO » The FBI and the Transportation Security Administration are investigating sightings of an object resembling a missile flying over the Hilo Airport area Tuesday morning, Hawaii County Civil Defense said. Reports gave opposite descriptions of its direction and widely varying estimates of its size. The largest estimate was about 12 feet long, and the smallest was one foot. One report said it was headed over the airport's main runway, but another said it was headed north from Hilo, away from the airport. Civil Defense official Lanny Nakano said the federal agencies classified the sighting as unconfirmed. The FBI and TSA did not return requests for comment. Nakano, reading from notes from another Civil Defense official, said it was seen at 10:18 a.m. headed away from the airport. But an eyewitness, who asked that his name not be used, told the Star-Bulletin he saw it heading from the Civic Auditorium area to the Keaukaha area, which would take it over the main runway.... http://starbulletin.com censor News |

UN gets generous offers for new force in Lebanon |
The United Nations received substantial offers of troops for Lebanon that may enable it to field an advance force of 3,500 in two weeks, despite France's refusal to provide a large contingent. "I would say the show is on the road," said Mark Malloch Brown, the U.N. deputy secretary-general, after a meeting of more than 40 potential troop contributing nations on Thursday. Deployments by Italy, Spain and Belgium, are key because they can move their forces into Lebanon quickly to meet the 15-day U.N. deadline for the advance contingent. All three nations are studying draft rules of engagement presented at the meeting, participants reported. A U.N. Security Council resolution adopted on August 11 called for a truce and a peacekeeping force to help the Lebanese army supervise the pull-out of Israeli troops from the southern Lebanon after 34 days of fighting between Israel and Hizbollah guerrillas. Most fighting stopped on Monday.... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060818/ts_nm/mideast_dc

West Virginia airport re-opens after evacuation prompted by woman's bag |
Federal agents are still looking for answers about the suspicious substance in a woman's carry-on bag that prompted the shut down and evacuation of Tri-State Airport on Thursday. The airport terminal reopened under tight security Thursday night, with one commercial flight arriving about 11 p.m. Officials expected flights would return to a normal schedule Friday. The woman, whose luggage triggered the investigation, was questioned by FBI agents, but had not been arrested as of Thursday night. Tests continued on the two bottles of liquid that prompted the evacuation. While officials said Thursday night that the liquids tested negative for explosives, they continued to investigate the residue on the outside of the containers, which apparently alerted security agents and dogs earlier in the day. "We are fact-gathering as to why these materials ended up suspicious, and why the testing came back the way it did," said FBI Special Agent Jeff Killeen. ... http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2006-08-17-terminal-evacuated_x.htm?csp=34

Majority believe west is losing 'war on terror' |
Four out of five Britons believe the west is losing the "war against terror" and want Tony Blair to distance British foreign policy from the United States, a poll revealed today. The YouGov survey for today's Spectator magazine, conducted following the arrest of 24 people in the alleged airline terror plot last week, also revealed that a majority thought it fairly likely Britain would suffer a terrorist attack in the next year, while a third thought it very likely. Tony Blair's policy of standing shoulder to shoulder with President Bush on foreign policy, most recently seen in his backing of the US stance in the Israel-Lebanon war, is only supported by 14% of the public, according to the poll.... http://politics.guardian.co.uk/terrorism/story/0,,1852229,00.html

Rushdie jumps to Grass's defence |
Salman Rushdie has defended fellow author and friend Guenter Grass after the German writer finally admitted he had served in the Waffen SS. Rushdie told BBC Radio 4's Today programme the news was "disappointing". But he said the writer's work was "not undone" by the revelations and that his past was a "youthful mistake". Grass's autobiography has gone on sale in German bookshops two weeks early following increased interest after the disclosure in a newspaper interview. "There is great interest in the book," said a spokeswoman for bookshop Dussmann in Berlin. Grass, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1999, is widely admired as a novelist whose books frequently revisit the war years and is also known as an outspoken peace activist. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/4801327.stm

Airlines set to sue for £300m over terror losses |
Part of Seattle's port was evacuated and a half-mile security cordon put in place after sniffer dogs indicated that two containers allegedly from Pakistan might contain explosives.A United Airlines flight bound for Washington from Heathrow was diverted after a mid-air security alert. AIRLINES including Ryanair are considering suing the Government for up to £300 million to recover the losses incurred since extra security measures were imposed last week. They are hoping that the threat of legal action will force ministers to lift the restrictions on hand luggage, which have caused thousands of flight cancellations and delayed millions of passengers since an alleged terrorist plot was foiled. But the Home Office said yesterday that it would press the rest of Europe to adopt Britain’s tighter airport controls, which include a smaller maximum size for hand luggage and a ban on carrying liquids ... http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-2316645,00.html
