Indonesian Military Admits to Taking Money |
Indonesia's military acknowledged for the first time Thursday that a U.S. gold-mining conglomerate has been providing direct ``support'' to army units accused of human rights abuses for decades in the remote province of West Papua. Joint services spokesman Maj. Gen. Kohirin Suganda said the armed forces ``as an institution'' had never received donations from Freeport-McMoRan Co. ``But we have heard that Freeport provides support such as vehicles, fuel and meals directly to the units in the field,'' Suganda said. ``That's the company's policy. It was not done because we requested it.'' Suganda was responding to an article published Tuesday in The New York Times that detailed the New Orleans-based Freeport-McMoRan's payments of $20 million to military commanders in the area in the last seven years in exchange for protection of its facilities in the remote province. ... http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,1280,-5510649,00.html

Five die in wildfires sweeping US |
At least five people have died in the wildfires which have swept across parts of the US states of Texas and Oklahoma. The fires, fanned by strong winds and dry weather, have destroyed nearly 200 homes and scorched thousands of acres of land in the past two days. Wednesday's calmer winds helped efforts to contain many fires but the winds are forecast to pick up this weekend. Children playing with fireworks, tossed cigarettes and burning rubbish have been blamed for the outbreaks. An estimated 124 homes were destroyed in Texas and 50 in the neighbouring state of Oklahoma. Worst hit was the central Texan town of Cross Plains, where the fires forced its 1,000 inhabitants to leave... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/4566228.stm

Bush's Domestic Wiretaps May Complicate Criminal Prosecutions |
Bush's authorization of eavesdropping in the U.S. to fight terrorism may make it more difficult to prosecute a range of cases, including illegal fund-raising and drug offenses, legal scholars say. Bush last week said he authorized a ``limited'' program of monitoring phone calls, e-mails and satellite communications without court approval, calling it vital to national security. The program, a response to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, provides defense lawyers with an opening to challenge a variety of criminal charges, scholars say. ``If they'd been smart, they would have only used it to stop terrorist attacks from happening and not in prosecutions,'' said Michael Greenberger, director of the University of Maryland's Center for Health and Homeland Security in Baltimore. ``Defense lawyers are obviously quite alert to the fact that they've got to go back and look at this: whether their defendants were charged based on evidence illegally obtained.'' ... http://quote.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000087&sid=aXa1xomXvCTA&refer=home

Premature Explosion Kills Taliban Bombers |
Two suspected Taliban suicide bombers died Thursday when explosives they were strapping to their bodies exploded prematurely in southern Afghanistan, officials said. The blast follows a string of suicide attacks and comes days after a top rebel commander claimed that more than 200 insurgents were willing to kill themselves in assaults on U.S. forces and their allies. Militants also used a roadside bomb to wound two U.S. troops driving in a desert in southern Helmand province Thursday, a military statement said. A purported Taliban spokesman, Qari Mohammed Yousaf, claimed responsibility. The attack came a day after a U.S. soldier was killed and two others wounded in another roadside bombing in mountains in eastern Afghanistan. This year has been the deadliest in Afghanistan since U.S.-led forces ousted the Taliban in 2001 for harboring Usama bin Laden. The fighting has killed more than 1,500 people as militants belonging to the Taliban, Al Qaeda and other groups have stepped up attacks... http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,180090,00.html

Technology Trends of 2006 Technology Becomes More Customized and Goes Everywhere |
Blogs and podcasts are so 2005. In 2006, it's going to be all about vlogs, mobisodes, and cell phones that can swipe credit cards. Tech expert Omar Wasow explained the biggest technology trends predicted for next year:Expansion of Wireless Internet AccessWireless Internet access will become more and more pervasive. We have WiFi hot spots, then hot zones. But this year, entire cities — including San Francisco and Philadelphia — will be entire urban zones of wireless Internet access. More cities will follow as new technologies make this possible. One technology is called Edge, which uses the next generation of WiFi, called WIMAX. Some of this access will be free; other places you may need to pay a small monthly fee. ... http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Technology/story?id=1451747&CMP=OTC-RSSFeeds0312
