4 years for 100 deaths |
The former manager of the heavy-metal band Great White was sentenced yesterday to four years in prison -- well short of the maximum -- for his role in a pyrotechnics fire that killed 100 concertgoers. Daniel Biechele gazed downward and choked back tears as he apologized for the Feb. 20, 2003, blaze at the Station nightclub in West Warwick. "I don't know that I'll ever forgive myself for what happened that night, so I can't expect anyone else to," he said, his lip quivering. "I never wanted anyone to be hurt in any way. I never imagined that anyone ever would be." Biechele, 29, could have gotten as many as 10 years behind bars under a deal he struck with prosecutors in February, when he pleaded guilty to 100 counts of involuntary manslaughter. "The greatest sentence that can be imposed upon you has been imposed upon you by yourself," Superior Court Judge Francis Darigan Jr. told Biechele, drawing sobs and groans from some of those in the courtroom... http://www.washingtontimes.com/national/20060510-115730-6545r.htm

Division over Bush migrant plan |
President Bush's latest plan to counter the flow of illegal migrants entering the United States has drawn varied reactions from the US and Mexico. In a prime-time TV address Mr Bush said he would send up to 6,000 National Guard soldiers to the US-Mexico border. Democrats vowed to support "reasonable plans" but some conservatives said Mr Bush had not gone far enough. Monday night's speech from the Oval Office was the first time in his presidency that Mr Bush had addressed a mainly domestic issue in a live prime time television appearance. And he acknowledged the immigration issue had stirred "intense emotions". ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4986316.stm

Saudi king cracks down on photos of women Monarch warns media not to print pictures in effort to appease Islamists |
Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah, under pressure from Islamists to curb reforms, has warned local media against showing pictures of Saudi women, local newspapers reported on Tuesday. Many Saudis have said they hope the king, who came to power last year, will loosen strict political and social mores in the ultra-conservative kingdom which imposes an austere version of Islam called Wahhabism.Newspapers have broken with tradition and have more frequently begun printing photographs of Saudi women beside stories, usually with hair covered but faces showing, which many Wahhabi Islamists consider morally wrong.
