Many women who have late abortions had not realised they were pregnant, a study has found. Southampton and Kent University experts asked 883 women why they had abortions in the second trimester - between 13 and 24 weeks into the pregnancy. The researchers say women need more information so that they realise they are pregnant much earlier. But anti-abortion campaigners said the rights of the unborn child should take precedence. Around 11% of abortions take place after the 12th week of pregnancy. Just over 1% of those occur after a woman is 20 weeks pregnant. Most abortions are permitted until the 24th week, although they can be carried out later if doctors believe the baby has a severe disability or if the mother's life is at risk. The time-limit for abortions is proving increasingly controversial, as medical advances mean even very premature babies can survive. About 190,000 abortions take place in England and Wales annually. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk censor News |

BBC to open up archive for trial |
The BBC is to open up its vast archive of video and audio in an on-demand trial involving more than 20,000 people in the UK. Full-length programmes, as well as scripts and notes, will be available for download from the BBC's website. The pilot is part of the BBC's plans to eventually offer more than a million hours of TV and radio from its archive. The BBC's Future Media boss Ashley Highfield made the announcement at an industry conference in Cannes. "Our audience increasingly want and expect to dictate how, when and where they get our services," he told the conference. Mr Highfield, director of Future Media and Technology, said the BBC was starting to deliver content in a "hybrid environment", in which digital TV, radio, the web, set-top boxes and personal video recorders were combining to offer interactive services. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6568163.stm

Fossilised trees mystery solved |
A Cardiff fossil expert has identified a pair of 385-million-year-old trees, thought to be among the world's oldest. American researchers found fossilised remains in New York state two years ago, but their identity was unknown. They called in Dr Christopher Berry from Cardiff University, who confirmed the remains are from the Genus Wattieza, a fern-like plant which formed earth's first known forests. Dr Berry described the discovery as a "spectacular" find. The upright stumps of fossilised trees were first uncovered after a flash flood in Gilboa, New York, more than a century ago. But until two further fossils were found two years ago, which had fallen sideways with their trunk, branches, twigs and crown still intact, no-one knew what the entire trees looked like. The American team called in Dr Berry, who has 17 years of tree fossil expertise, to help. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/wales/6568233.stm

MACABRE VIDEO MESSAGE FROM VIRGINIA TECH KILLER Testament of a Mass Murderer |
The Virginia Tech murderer has left behind a gruesome testament -- a "manifesto" with videos and photographs that he coolly took to the post office during his killing spree. The macabre message reveals the troubled soul of a psychopath -- and the shortcomings of society. The package was sent by express mail on Monday. But due to a bungled address with an incorrect zip code, it only arrived at the NBC mailroom at Rockefeller Center on Wednesday. Inside? A DVD with 43 photographs and 23 QuickTime videos -- and a long "manifesto." They were the last words of the Virginia Tech killer, Cho Seung-Hui. "You had a hundred billion chances and ways to avoid today," Cho, 23, mumbled into the camera with lifeless eyes and a black baseball cap on backwards. "But you decided to spill my blood. You forced me into a corner and gave me only one option. The decision was yours. Now you have blood on your hands that will never wash off." ... http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/0,1518,478194,00.html

Chinese growth heating up economy |
China's economy has grown by an annual rate of 11.1% in the first three months of 2007, official figures show, fanning fears it is starting to overheat. First quarter growth topped forecasts and was significantly up on the 10.4% rate in the final three months of 2006. Separate figures showed annual inflation rose to 3.3% in March. China's main share index closed 4.5% lower amid concerns interest rates will have to rise to slow inflation because earlier measures have largely failed. The drop was the biggest since an almost 9% slump on the Shanghai stock exchange earlier this year prompted a global sell-off that shook markets in Europe, Asia and the US. "Investors are worried the government may take serious steps to rein in the economy, such as an interest hike plus some administrative measures," said Xu Yinhui, a fund manager at Guotai Junan Securities. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/6570713.stm
