The Supreme Court ruled against two foreign suspects Wednesday who argued an international treaty required police to inform them that they had a right to contact their governments when they were arrested. By a 6-3 vote, justices did not decide whether a 1969 treaty signed by the United States and several other countries requires suspects to be informed of such a right. Writing for the majority, Chief Justice John Roberts said the two men - one from Honduras, the other from Mexico - are not entitled to suppression of statements to police or another chance to raise objections based on the treaty after failing to do so at trial. Notice that <i>Roberts said “foreign suspects have the same protections that U.S. citizens have when arrested: the right to due process and the right to an attorney.”</i> Most ignored that since 9/11 in the Phony War on the Boogieman ... http://www.guardian.co.uk censor News |

Tenn. and Texas execute two killers, third receives stay |
Tennessee executed killer Sedley Alley, the state's second execution in 45 years, on Wed morning, but stayed another execution pending a review of his competency. Texas executed train-hopping serial killer Angel Maturino Resendiz Tue night. Alley was pronounced dead at 3:12 a.m. ET. He was put to death for killing 19-year-old Marine Suzanne Collins in 1985 while she jogged near a Navy base north of Memphis. Though he confessed, he claimed at trial that he was not responsible for the sexual assault and murder because he had multiple personalities. He recanted his confession in 2004, and said DNA testing could prove his innocence. Resendiz' execution Tue night was Texas' 13th of the year in the nation's most active death penalty state. Resendiz, who had told psychiatrists he couldn't be executed because was half-man and half-angel and didn't believe he could die, received lethal injection for the slaying of a physician in 1998. ... http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2006-06-28-executions_x.htm?csp=34

Last week, Mr Karzai criticised Nato and US-led operations in Afghanistan, deploring the deaths of Afghans. The remarks highlighted strains with Washington over the coalition's efforts to confront the Taleban and other insurgents. There is also a climate of deep mistrust and suspicion between Afghanistan and Pakistan, two key allies in the "war on terror", the BBC's Bilal Sarway in Kabul says... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/5123648.stm

Iceland and Australia top happiness poll |
They are as different as two countries can be: one big, the other small; one hot, the other cold; and at opposite ends of the world from each other. But if it's happiness you're after, Iceland and Australia are the best places to live in the world.A new study that seeks to go beyond the simple measure of GDP and gauge more subtle aspects of wellbeing such as life-expectancy, education and living standards, puts Iceland top of the international happiness scale, with Australia a close second. At the bottom end, the economists Andrew Leigh, of the Australian National University, and Justin Wolfers, of Wharton University, Pennsylvania, ranked Russians, Ukrainians, Romanians and Bulgarians as the world's most miserable. Interestingly, happiness was not always dependent on wealth. The study showed that OECD statistics suggested relatively poor countries such as Mexico and Nigeria were happier than some developed nations. The economists decided to study national happiness quotas because ... http://www.guardian.co.uk/australia/story/0,,1807947,00.html?gusrc=rss
