The ruling party in Ivory Coast has called for the 4,000 French peacekeepers in the country to leave. The head of the Ivorian Popular Front (FPI), Pascal Affi N'Guessan, also called for a UN-appointed mediating body to be dissolved. Ivory Coast has been split in two by civil war for four years, and French and UN peacekeepers keep them apart. But tension is now mounting as President Laurent Gbagbo's mandate is due to run out at the end of October. Mr Affi N'Guessan made his disgust with the international community clear. He is already under the threat of sanctions for blocking the peace process. His latest speech will not have helped his cause. Mr Affi N'Guessan said the 4,000 French peacekeepers must leave Ivory Coast, and called for the UN-appointed mediating body to be dissolved. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk censor News |

Violence sweeps Iraq on Ramadan |
At least 35 people have been killed in a car bomb attack on a kerosene tanker in the mainly Shia district of Sadr City in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. Nine severed heads were also found in the city of Tikrit as violence swept across the country. The BBC's Ian Pannell in Baghdad said most bombing victims were women queuing for cooking fuel to use throughout the holy Muslim month of Ramadan. US officials have predicted an increase in violence throughout Ramadan. Meanwhile, Iraqi officials say they have captured a leader of violent Sunni militant group, Ansar al-Sunna. The bomb attack is one of the deadliest in Iraq in recent weeks. At least another 37 people were injured in the bomb blast, and Iraqi police Colonel Saad Abdul-Sada said that the death toll could rise further. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/5373050.stm

Even Unbuilt, Jerusalem Tolerance Museum at Center of Fight Between Jews and Muslims |
The Museum of Tolerance started off with good intentions, over $100 million in donations, an eye-catching design by architect Frank Gehry, a 2004 kickoff ceremony attended by Arnold Schwarzenegger, and a great piece of Jerusalem real estate. But underneath that real estate, it turned out, there were Muslim graves. As a result, instead of bringing this contentious city's warring tribes together, the museum has sparked a fight with political, religious and historical dimensions between Muslims and Jews and all this before it has even been built. Months of arbitration have ended in deadlock, the site is enclosed in aluminum walls, and the dispute is now before Israel's Supreme Court. Even if the court gives the go-ahead, however, the Museum of Tolerance could well remain permanently tainted by allegations of intolerance. ... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=2482254

Probe into 'Bin Laden death' leak |
President Jacques Chirac has ordered an inquiry into the leak of a French secret service memo claiming that Osama Bin Laden had died. Mr Chirac told reporters he was surprised the memo had been leaked, and refused to comment on the claim itself. A French newspaper quoted a document as saying the Saudi secret services were convinced the al-Qaeda leader had died of typhoid in Pakistan in late August. Officials in Pakistan and the US said they could not confirm the account. Saudi-born Bin Laden was based in Afghanistan until the Taleban government there was overthrown by US-backed forces in 2001 after the 9/11 attacks. Since then, US and Pakistani officials have regularly said they believe he is hiding in the lawless border area between Afghanistan and Pakistan. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/5374160.stm

Severe weather kills 5 in Midwest, South |
High winds, heavy rain and tornadoes pounded parts of the Midwest and the South, killing five people and stranding others in trees and shelters while forecasters warned Saturday that the stormy weather was expected to continue. Officials were trying to "find and rescue anyone else we might have missed throughout the night," said Tamara Roberts of the Sharp County, Ark., Sheriff's Office. Areas in northeast Arkansas and southeast Missouri received more than 10 inches of rain within 24 hours, said David Blanchard, a National Weather Service forecaster in Paducah, Ky. Stormy weather and possibly tornadoes were forecast for the region Saturday. "There's so much moisture in the atmosphere, you could get a lot of rain in no time flat," said Brian Smith, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. Two tornadoes swept through south-central Missouri on Friday afternoon, damaging more than 100 homes and tearing off part of a roof at a middle school moments after a tornado drill... http://www.usatoday.com/weather/stormcenter/2006-09-23-midwest-storms_x.htm?csp=34
