Israel has agreed to a 48-hour halt in aerial activity over southern Lebanon, a U.S. official said Sunday amid widespread outrage over an Israeli air strike that killed at least 56 Lebanese, mostly women and children, when it leveled a building where they had taken shelter. But within hours, there were reports that Israeli warplanes had launched new raids on eastern Lebanon on Monday. Lebanese security sources said at least two air strikes hit roads near the border with Syria in the early hours. The announcement of the pause in overflights in southern Lebanon made by State Dept spokesman Adam Ereli appeared to reflect American pressure on Israel. Ereli, who was in Israel with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, said Israel has reserved the right to hit targets if it learns that attacks are being prepared against them. An Israeli government official confirmed Prime Minister Ehud Olmert agreed to the 48-hour halt in air strikes on Lebanon. ... http://www.msnbc.msn.com censor News |

Blair Calls for `Final Effort' to Restart Trade Talks |
U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair said he and U.S. President George W. Bush want to see global trade negotiations restarted, a week after talks among key World Trade Organization governments collapsed. Hopes of a deal ended July 24 amid clashes over farm subsidies, undermining efforts to reach a global market-opening agreement. The European Union, India and Japan blamed the U.S. for the deadlock, which prompted WTO Director-General Pascal Lamy to shelve the five-year-old talks to dismantle market barriers and lift millions out of poverty. ``I have not given up on the WTO trade round,'' Blair told executives at an event hosted by News Corp., according to a remarks released by his office. After talks with Bush on July 28, ``we both agreed we needed to make one final effort to re- energize the negotiation and I hope we can do so within the next few weeks.'' ... http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aUl.Z.41bbUM&refer=top_world_news

Bush Submits New Boogieman Detainee Bill |
U.S. citizens suspected of terror ties might be detained indefinitely and barred from access to civilian courts under legislation proposed by the Bush administration, say legal experts reviewing an early version of the bill. A 32-page draft measure is intended to authorize the Pentagon's tribunal system, established shortly after the 2001 terrorist attacks to detain and prosecute detainees captured in the war on terror. The tribunal system was thrown out last month by the Supreme Court. Administration officials, who declined to comment on the draft, said the proposal was still under discussion and no final decisions had been made. Anyone still think this Government of Treasonous Traitors give a crap about the Constitution they all Swore to Protect and Defend? The only question is, when will Americans “who still care” going to do something about it? I will bet most will continue voting for these two parties instead of arresting them all for Treason. Any takers?... http://www.forbes.com/business/feeds/ap/2006/07/28/ap2912810.html

Rice said she called Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Saniora to say she would postpone a visit to Beirut on Sunday, and that she had work to do in Jerusalem to end the fighting.“We are also pushing for an urgent end to the current hostilities, but the views of the parties on how to achieve this are different,” she said.A plan to end fighting?A draft resolution circulating Saturday among council members would call for an immediate halt to fighting and seek a wide new buffer zone in south Lebanon monitored by international forces and the Lebanese army. Qana attack stirs worldwide outcry |
The deadly Israeli airstrike in the southern Lebanese town of Qana provoked stiff and swift condemnation across the globe Sunday as the battle between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon showed no sign of easing. In an impassioned TV address, Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora said: "Out of respect for the souls of our innocent martyrs and the remains of our children buried under the rubble of Qana, we scream out to our fellow Lebanese and to other Arab brothers and to the whole world to stand united in the face of the Israeli war criminals." Lebanese Justice Minister Charles Rizk said: "All I can tell you is that in view of this horrendous crime the atmosphere now is very very very tense." Syria said the United States could no longer justify its support for Israeli military action in Lebanon and the Palestinian territories after Israel's air strike. Stirring The Nation's Melting Pot Assimilating And Americanizing Latinos In The United States |
By the year 2040, there will be 60 million Latinos in the United States. All they had to do was take to the streets, together, this spring to force the question, yet again, in our immigrant history: is it different this time? Is this invasion a threat? Will we become them or will they become us, asks CBS Sunday Morning contributor Martha Teichner. The Barajas family, gathered at their house in East Los Angeles for a birthday party, offered a glimpse into Latino assimilation in America. "Happy Birthday" was sung in English and the name on the cake read "Bobby" not Roberto. Louis Barajas, Bobby's brother, says everyone he knows comes from an immigrant family. "There isn't a friend that I have that doesn't have parents that came from Mexico," he says. ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/07/30/sunday/main1847500.shtml?source=RSS&attr=U.S._1847500
