An Israeli woman was jailed for three years yesterday after pleading guilty to meeting one of the most wanted Palestinian militants and spending time in the West Bank town of Jenin. After a unusual prosecution Tali Fahima accepted a plea bargain deal from prosecutors and is expected to serve about 10 months in prison because she has already been in custody for more than a year. Fahima, 29, was arrested last year after repeated visits to Jenin refugee camp to meet Zakaria Zubeidi, the leader of the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade responsible for suicide bombings and other attacks against Israelis. She was charged with offences including providing information to the enemy and assisting a terrorist organisation, which carry the death penalty. The prosecution said it would seek a life sentence. Shaul Mofaz, the defence minister, who signed the detention order, said Fahima "took part in planning a terrorist attack in Israel". ... http://www.guardian.co.uk censor News |

Judge says he can't free Uighurs at Guantanamo |
A federal judge on Thursday ruled that he does not have authority to order the release of two ethnic Uighur prisoners from China detained at Guantanamo Bay, even though the U.S. military declared they are no longer "enemy combatants." U.S. District Judge James Robertson said he finds that "a federal court has no relief to offer" Abu Bakker Qassim and A'del Abdu Al-Hakim, who are being held at the U.S. military prison in Cuba while the United States searches for a country to take them in. "An order requiring their release into the United States, even into some kind of parole 'bubble,' some legal-fictional status in which they would be here but would not be 'admitted,' would have national security and diplomatic implications beyond the competence or the authority of this court," Robertson said in a 12-page ruling. The two men have been detained since June 2002 at Guantanamo Bay, where the United States hold suspects ... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20051223/ts_nm/security_guantanamo_uighurs_dc

Millions go to Iraqi, Afghan 'condolence' |
The U.S. government has spent scores of millions of dollars helping the civilian casualties of its military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. Much of the assistance comes from a fund named in honor of a slain American aid worker who made recompense for the innocent victims of wars her life's work. Marla Ruzicka was 28 in April when she died at the hands of a suicide bomber in Baghdad. She had urged lawmakers to put money into the annual foreign operations spending bill in three consecutive years, providing a total of nearly $40 million for individuals and communities in Afghanistan and Iraq that suffered what the military calls collateral damage. In the latest bill, the civilian assistance program was named the Marla Ruzicka Iraqi War Victims Fund. An aide to Sen. Patrick J. Leahy, Vermont Democrat, one of the key lawmakers involved, said that about half the amount appropriated -- $25 million for Iraq and $13 million for Afghanistan -- has been distributed so far. ... http://www.washingtontimes.com/national/20051219-110921-5499r.htm
