The Red Cross has admitted Israel to the worldwide humanitarian organization early Thursday, ending decades of exclusion linked to the Jewish state's refusal to accept the traditional cross symbol. The approval came in the early hours Thursday following a two-day International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent. With a round of applause the Red Cross federation admitted Israel's Magen David Adom society simultaneously with the Palestine Red Crescent. An optional new emblem was adopted so that Israel could retain its red star of David instead of having to adopt the red cross or crescent used by the 184 other societies in the global movement.... http://www.cnn.com censor News |

Landslides, floods kill over 200 in Indonesia |
Indonesian rescuers scoured mud-filled homes for bodies and some survivors suffered diarrhoea and skin diseases after landslides and floods on eastern Sulawesi island killed 210 people, officials said on Thursday.A search-and-rescue operation has been underway in South Sulawesi province after two days of heavy rain at the beginning of the week, but officials said some areas were inaccessible because roads and bridges had been damaged. Another 104 people were missing in Sinjai regency, the worst-hit area after flooding early on Tuesday that turned swathes of land into vast lakes. The Indonesian military, police and civilian search and rescue teams have been scouring the affected areas trying to recover bodies and digging into mud from landslides or left behind by the floods to look for survivors. ... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=2105385

Al-Qaida No. 2 calls on Afghans to rise up |
Al-Qaida’s No. 2 leader has issued a new videotape calling on Afghans to rise up against U.S.-led forces in Afghanistan in the wake of rioting last month in Kabul. The video by Ayman al-Zawahri — which would be his sixth this year — was reported Wednesday by IntelCenter, an Alexandria, Va.-based contractor that provides counterterrorism intelligence services to the U.S. government.“I am calling upon the Muslims in Kabul in particular and in all Afghanistan in general and for the sake of God to stand up in an honest stand in the face of the infidel forces that are invading Muslim lands,” al-Zawahri said, according to a translation by IntelCenter. The tape appears to have been made the day after a May 29 accident in which a U.S. military truck crashed into traffic in Kabul, killing up to five people. The incident sparked anti-foreigner riots in Kabul that left about 20 people dead — the deadliest unrest in the Afghan capital since the fall of the Taliban in 2001... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13470975/

Firefox, iTunes, Skype Top Most Dangerous List |
Firefox, iTunes, and Skype were the top 3 applications in a list of 15 with the most security vulnerabilities, a Cambridge, Mass.-based security company said this week. The list from Bit9 calls out applications frequently downloaded by individuals (and thus perhaps not sanctioned by the enterprise) which have at least one critical vulnerability, and that rely on the end user, not the corporate IT department, to manually patch or upgrade to fix bugs. "These popular software applications are frequently downloaded to corporate desktops and can present serious risks for enterprise computing environments," said Todd Brennan, the co-founder and chief technology officer at Bit9, in a statement. "Understanding what software is actually running in your organization across your entire desktop environment is the first step in regaining application control and protecting your corporate infrastructure." ... http://www.techweb.com/wire/security/189600176

Iraq: US may be asked to leave |
THE level of violence in some areas of Iraq is worsening dramatically and US forces may soon be asked to leave by the Iraqi Government. In an exclusive interview with The Australian, former US deputy secretary of state Richard Armitage has given a gloomy assessment of the situation. "The British used to make a big deal of walking around in their berets in the south," he said. "Now they won't even go to the latrines without their helmets. The south has got much rougher, it's mainly Shia on Shia violence." Mr Armitage said much of the violence came from differences over how the Islamic religion should be interpreted. And he said he believed the Iraqis would soon ask the US to leave their country. The most optimistic scenario following a US withdrawal would be that Iraq would become a loose federation -- although the term federation would not be used because it upsets neighbouring Turkey -- with a weak central government. "The difficulty then will be to stop them (the Iraqis) causing ... http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,20867,19538585-601,00.html

US plan for immigration hearings. Are they just stalling this until after this election? Then grant immunity, hoping the American short memory takes effect before the next? |
Republican leaders in the US House of Representatives have announced unusual plans to hold hearings around the country on the issue of immigration. The move will mean an extended delay to congressional negotiations to agree new legislation on the high-profile issue. "I'm not putting any timeline on this thing, but I think we need this thing done right," said the House speaker, the Republican Dennis Hastert. The House and Senate have endorsed very different bills on immigration. Both seek to tighten border security, but while the Senate bill includes a guest-worker programme and offers illegal immigrants a "path to citizenship". Notice none are talking about enforcing existing law. Maybe its time to get rid of both parties? Now that would be a Vote that actually changed something. All it takes is a NO to any Democrat or Republican. Try it, you will feel so much better getting rid of the bottom feeders and doing something good for our country. How could you lose?... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/5101598.stm
