Israel on Tuesday ruled out holding Mideast peace talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas once he forms a coalition with Hamas militants, saying the new unity government must give in to international demands to recognize Israel's right to exist. Hoping to find a way to persuade Hamas to moderate its hardline position, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice met with Arab security chiefs in Jordan and asked for their advice how to proceed, Arab officials said. The unity government deal between Hamas and Abbas' more moderate Fatah Party fell far short of the conditions set for restoring desperately needed foreign aid to the Palestinians, according to Israel and the United States. Discussion of the government overshadowed talks Monday between Rice, Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert that were initially billed as the beginning of a new peace push. ... http://www.foxnews.com censor News |

Four former Campbell deputies sentenced to prison for suspect abuse |
Four former Campbell County Sheriff's Deputies were sentenced to prison Wednesday. Five deputies pleaded guilty to conspiracy in the abuse of Lester Siler in June of 2004. The deputies went to Siler's Campbell County home because they suspected drug activity. Their assault of the suspect led to their firings and charges against them. They were accused of violating Siler's constitutional rights. Siler's wife secretly taped the deputies while they were in the Siler home. In one excerpt of the tape, Deputy David Webber is heard saying to Siler: "Let me tell you something. We're gonna know everybody that's supplying you. We're gonna know everything about your business today. And you're gonna take us and where you got your money, we're gonna take every dime you have today, and if we don't walk out of here with every piece of dope you got and every dime you got your (expletive) (expletive) is not going to make it to jail. Executions in Many Places Are on Hold Because of Ethical Conflict for Doctors |
A legal and ethical bind has brought executions to a halt in North Carolina: A federal judge ruled that a doctor must monitor the condemned for signs of pain. But the state's medical board has threatened to punish any doctor who takes part in an execution. The result: Gov. Mike Easley says no more executions until the state can "untangle this Gordian knot." Challenges to lethal injection namely, whether it violates the Constitution's ban on cruel and unusual punishment have effectively placed executions on hold in 11 states. The question of doctor participation has figured in some of those disputes. "It's an inherent flaw of lethal injection, that in order to be reliably humane, it requires the participation of a group of people who are under ethical constraints and considerations," said Dr. Mark Heath, an anesthesiologist at Columbia University Medical Center, who has studied lethal injection cases across the nation. ... http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=2889814

McCain slates Rumsfeld over Iraq |
John McCain, in an effort to reinvent himself as the candidate of the Republican establishment in the 2008 elections, has denounced the former Pentagon chief, Donald Rumsfeld, as one of the worst in history. Mr McCain's comments, made during a campaign swing through South Carolina, were seen today as part of a delicate balancing act for the senator from Arizona, who is trying to shed his image as a maverick and win over conservatives and the religious right. In that vein, Mr McCain has positioned himself as a strong supporter of the war on Iraq - as are the majority of Republican primary voters. But he accused Mr Rumsfeld of compromising that mission by failing to send enough troops for the invasion."We are paying a very heavy price for the mismanagement - that's the kindest word I can give you - of Donald Rumsfeld, of this war," Mr McCain told a community for retired people near the resort area of Hilton Head. "The price is very, very heavy and I regret it enormously."... http://www.guardian.co.uk/usa/story/0,,2017552,00.html?gusrc=rss&feed=12

Wyoming's Sex Offender Rules May Attract Convicts From Other States; Lawmakers Promise Reforms |
Wyoming, with its wide-open spaces and crisp, clear vistas, is starting to worry it has made itself too attractive in one respect: Convicted sex offenders from out of state are moving in, apparently because the laws are less restrictive. "We don't want to become the playground for sex offenders," Attorney General Pat Crank said. "But there must be something that sex offenders are seeing. Otherwise they wouldn't be moving here in the kind of numbers that we seem to be seeing." Wyoming is home to about 1,200 known sex offenders. That is not a large number for such a sparsely populated state. But law enforcement officials and legislators are worried because 56 percent of those offenders moved to Wyoming after being convicted somewhere else. ... http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=2889777
