Moscow snubs US to sell arms to Venezuela |
Russia signed a £1.6bn arms deal with President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela yesterday, risking a confrontation with the US, which has imposed an arms embargo on the South American country. The outspoken Venezuelan president, who has claimed that America wants to assassinate him and pledged cheap heating fuel for London's poor, also told reporters in Moscow that his country could develop its own nuclear programme. "Maybe some day we will start using nuclear energy," he said, according to Interfax. He did not specify when or how he might obtain nuclear power, but his ambitions will rile a Bush administration already deeply concerned by Iran's nuclear programme. Moscow has agreed to build nuclear power plants for Tehran, despite Washington's claim that the scheme is a front for a nuclear weapons programme.... http://www.guardian.co.uk/venezuela/story/0,,1832194,00.html?gusrc=rss

Al Qaeda calls on Muslims to fight Israel Al Qaeda No. 2 tells Muslims in Lebanon, 'We will stand with you' |
With a poster of the burning World Trade Center behind him, Osama bin Laden's top lieutenant appeared on tape Thursday calling on Muslims to join the fight against Israel and "rise up seeking martyrdom and attack the crusaders and Zionists."The video of Ayman al-Zawahiri aired on Al-Jazeera.He likened the battles in Lebanon and Gaza to al Qaeda's battle against the West and called on Muslims to wage "jihad in the name of God." He did not specifically mention Hezbollah, which is battling Israel in southern Lebanon, or Hamas, which is embroiled in fighting in Gaza. "The al Qaeda organization will not stay silent regarding what the Muslims in Palestine and Lebanon are facing," al-Zawahiri said. Hezbollah, a Shiite militia, and al Qaeda, a Sunni group, share a common enemy, but they have long been wary of each another. Despite their differences, al-Zawahiri tells the Muslims in Lebanon and Palestinian territories, "Stand with us and we will stand with you."... http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/07/27/zawahiri.tape/index.html?section=cnn_world

US boosts Iraq troop levels amid Baghdad violence |
Defense Secretary Rumsfeld on Thur ordered about 3,500 U.S. troops in Iraq to stay up to 4 months past their scheduled departure, boosting US forces in an attempt to curb unrelenting violence in Baghdad. The move, involving the 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team from Fort Wainwright in Alaska, is the latest sign that any significant reduction in the size of the 130,000-strong US force in Iraq is unlikely soon. It comes after Bush said on Tue after meeting visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki that more US and Iraqi troops would be deployed in Baghdad from elsewhere in Iraq to confront mounting sectarian violence. About 100 people have died daily in attacks between Iraqi factions in the past few weeks, raising fears of all-out civil war.The Pentagon said Rumsfeld approved a request by Army Gen. George Casey, the top US commander in Iraq, to extend the year-long tour of the brigade, which has operated primarily in the Mosul area in northern Iraq, by up to 120 days... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060727/pl_nm/iraq_usa_troops_dc

Security Council struggles over statement on UN observer deaths |
The UN Security Council will seek again to find an acceptable way of condemning the killing of four UN observers in Lebanon, after the United States rejected any criticism of the Israeli attack. After intense haggling among the 15-nation council, ambassadors failed to agree a presidential statement on Wednesday after becoming deadlocked on how to describe the attack, French ambassador Jean-Marc de La Sabliere, council president for July, told reporters."Members of the council are aware of the responsibility of the council towards the safety and the security of UN personnel all around the world," he said on Thursday."We did not reach an agreement tonight because there was no consensus on how to qualify the incident, and thus no consensus on the best wording to react to it."... http://www.turkishpress.com/news.asp?id=135133

Is it possible - is it conceivable - that Israel is losing its war in Lebanon? |
From this hill village in the south of the country, I am watching the clouds of brown and black smoke rising from its latest disaster in the Lebanese town of Bint Jbeil: up to 13 Israeli soldiers dead, and others surrounded, after a devastating ambush by Hizbollah guerrillas in what was supposed to be a successful Israeli military advance against a "terrorist centre". To my left smoke rises too, over the town of Khiam, where a smashed United Nations outpost remains the only memorial to the four UN soldiers - most of them decapitated by an American-made missile on Tuesday - killed by the Israeli air force. Indian soldiers of the UN army in southern Lebanon, visibly moved by the horror of bringing their Canadian, Fijian, Chinese and Austrian comrades back in at least 20 pieces from the clearly marked UN post next to Khiam prison, left their remains at Marjayoun hospital yesterday. ... http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article14223.htm
