Iraqi politicians -- frustrated by violence throughout the country and the glacial pace of parliamentary lawmaking -- say the nearly one-year-old government is failing. Iraqi lawmakers told CNN the government's impotence and inability to bring peace to the chaotic environment is basically structural, and not the product of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki. Mahmoud Othman, a Kurdish legislator, was quoted in the USA Today newspaper as describing al-Maliki as weak, but in an interview with CNN, he said, "It's not Maliki, it's the whole government." That government, he said, is failing on many fronts, such as providing security, fostering reconciliation and offering public services. He believes Iraq, not the U.S. government, should set deadlines for goals, and the government must "deliver" them or resign.... http://www.cnn.com censor News |

CPJ: Some Media Easing Up on Chavez Media Advocacy Group Says Politics Behind Chavez's Move to Pull TV License |
The Committee to Protect Journalists said Tuesday that Venezuela's refusal to renew the license of an opposition-aligned TV station is prompting some media outlets to soften their coverage of his government. After an investigation, the New York-based media advocacy group concluded that the decision not to renew the broadcast license of Radio Caracas Television was motivated by politics and that the government "failed to conduct a fair and transparent review." CPJ said that because dozens of radio stations and some TV channels also have licenses up for renewal this year, the "case is forcing other outlets to soften their coverage." President Hugo Chavez said in December the government would not renew the TV station's license, accusing it of supporting a failed 2002 coup against him. The station has sought to challenge the move in court but is set to go off the air at midnight May 27. ... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=3075973

EGore trains a global army. People actually follow this phony environmentalist? |
The stocky man with the soft Southern accent rivets the hotel ballroom crowd with his plea: "We are in a time of peril, so please allow me to explain a topic that has overwhelming importance in my life." Meet, no, not Al Gore, but Gary Dunham, 71, a grandfather from Texas who was the first of 1,000 Americans Gore trained to deliver his Oscar-winning An Inconvenient Truth slide show to schools, Rotary clubs and nursing homes around the nation. Two weeks ago, the last 150 of this hand-picked crew arrived here — paying their own way for everything but food — to go through a two-day seminar starring Gore but effectively led by Dunham and a few other graduates of the former vice president's global-warming boot camp. To date, The Climate Project has drawn everyone from Wal-Mart workers to Cameron Diaz. And though the 1,000 mark has been reached, "we keep hearing whispers that (Gore) might do more," “Inarguable truths” B S, they have made it Political Incorrect to even question it ... http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-04-24-gore-trainees_N.htm?csp=34

U.S. Ambassador Vows to Work With Argentina to Return Dirty War Suspect Nabbed in Virginia |
U.S. Ambassador Earl Anthony Wayne said Tuesday his government will work with Argentina to return a dirty war suspect arrested in the United States and wanted for trial in the South American nation. Ernesto Guillermo Barreiro, a retired Argentine army major accused of being the chief interrogator at a dictatorship-era torture center, was arrested this month in Virginia and charged with criminal violations of U.S. visa laws, U.S. officials said. Argentine prosecutors say Barreiro was responsible for the torture and death of several individuals during Argentina's 1976-83 dictatorship and its dirty war crackdown on dissent. In a meeting on a range of topics with Justice Minister Alberto Iribarne, Wayne said the United States will work with Argentina's government to ensure Barreiro's return, a U.S. Embassy statement said. Wayne did not say whether Barreiro would be deported or extradited. ... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=3075940

Bus violence rattles Minn. riders |
Commuters in the Twin Cities have been rattled by a series of attacks on buses in recent weeks, including two killings, and police have stepped up patrols of mass transit to safeguard worried passengers. Transit officials insist the three violent crimes since early March were isolated problems."I'm not minimizing how serious this is, but I guess my perspective has to be that we provided 74 million rides last year with only a few minor incidents," said Dave Indrehus, the police chief for Metro Transit. "We've got a safe system."Kevin Davis is among the passengers who are increasingly concerned for their safety. He now avoids interacting with other commuters."I don't look at anybody on the bus. I don't talk to anybody on the bus. I just look down and mind my own business," Davis said Tuesday as he waited at a stop along Route 5, considered the city's most rough-and-tumble route.... http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-04-24-bus-violence_N.htm?csp=34

Mexico City legalizes abortion |
Mexico City lawmakers voted to legalize abortion Tuesday, a decision likely to influence policies and health practices across Mexico and other parts of heavily Roman Catholic Latin America. The proposal, approved 46-19, with one abstention, will take effect with the expected signing by the city's leftist mayor. Abortion opponents have already vowed to appeal the law to the Supreme Court, a move likely to extend the bitter and emotional debate in this predominantly Catholic nation."Decriminalizing abortion is a historic triumph -- a triumph of the left," said city legislator Jorge Diaz Cuervo, a social democrat who voted for the bill. "Today, there is a new atmosphere in this city. It is the atmosphere of freedom."Nationally, Mexico allows abortion only in cases of rape, severe birth defects or if the woman's life is at risk. Doctors sometimes refuse to perform the procedure even under those circumstances.... http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/americas/04/24/mexico.abortion.ap/index.html?eref=rss_world
