Iraq's Prime Minister Nouri Maliki has suggested Iraqi troops will soon take control over more areas of the country. Before visiting the UK and US, Mr Maliki told the BBC that predictions foreign troops would be in Iraq for decades were wide of the mark. But he admitted sectarian violence was still a major problem that Iraqis would have to confront together. Mr Maliki met UK PM Tony Blair in London, and will be heading for the US for talks with President George W Bush. The three leaders were expected to discuss plans to continue the handover of responsibility for security to Iraqi troops in the south of Iraq, and the recent security clampdown in Baghdad, after another day of deadly bombings and attacks by insurgents. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk censor News |

An American in Beirut: The New Beirut Nightlife, Airstrikes as a Snooze Button |
As we start the third week of the newest crisis between Israel and Lebanon, predictions about when and how this will all end are hard to make. Lines in the sand are being leaped over every day. But one consistent routine has emerged in Beirut. Here, the most concentrated Israeli airstrikes and shelling have come between midnight and 6 a.m., creating the most abnormal and frightening snooze button one could imagine. The layout of our neighborhood is as follows: Our apartment is half a mile from the city's seaport. A couple hundred yards from the seaport is a row of massive and imposing Israeli gunboats. And somewhere in between our apartment building and the seaport is an unbelievably confused rooster. The rooster — apparently a resident of Achrafieh intent on staying — is the only barn animal I'm aware of in all of Beirut proper. ... http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,205262,00.html

Daily pill to 'cure Alzheimer's' |
Scientists have developed a once-a-day pill that they hope could potentially cure Alzheimer's disease. Tests in mice have shown the drug, PBT2, prevents build up of the amyloid protein linked to the disease. Protein levels dropped by 60% within 24 hours of a single dose, and memory performance improved within five days. A team from Australia's Mental Health Research Institute of Victoria, who are behind the research, hope the drug could be on the market in four years. Human tests are due to start next month, followed by a major international trial next year. Already preliminary tests in humans have showed the drug does not cause any major side-effects. The researchers believe the drug has the potential to delay the onset of disease, or slow down its progression. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/5210048.stm

Multiple blazes scorch Western states Fire crews fight expected 100 degree heat wave, windy weather |
A fast-growing wildfire turned away from homes in San Diego County early Monday after prompting calls for evacuations, as hot, windy weather sapped the endurance of firefighters. The blaze in Cleveland National Forest had grown to 6,000 acres — about 9 square miles — and prompted voluntary evacuations of hundreds of homes near Lake Morena, said Roxanne Provaznik of the California Department of Forestry. The blaze was moving south to southeast and away from homes, but it was moving rapidly, Provaznik said. Fire crews had to cope with California’s heat wave that has sent temperatures above 100 degrees. At dawn Monday, the temperature in the area was 74 degrees, but it was expected to reach at least 95.“It’s making it really rough for our firefighters,” Provaznik said.... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13949776/
