Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has vowed that Iran will not halt work on its controversial nuclear programme. He said the country would not back down "even one iota", despite mounting international pressure after it announced that it has enriched uranium. The head of the UN's nuclear watchdog, Mohamed ElBaradei, is in Tehran for talks aimed at defusing the stand-off. He said he hoped to convince Iran to suspend its uranium enrichment "until outstanding issues are clarified". Western nations suspect Iran of wanting to develop a nuclear weapon, but Tehran insists its plans are for a peaceful, civilian energy programme only. Speaking as Mr ElBaradei arrived in Tehran, Mr Ahmadinejad said: "Our answer to those who are angry about Iran obtaining the full nuclear cycle is one phrase, we say: Be angry and die of this anger." ... http://news.bbc.co.uk censor News |

At least 65,000 Iraqis have fled their homes as a result of sectarian violence and intimidation, according to new figures from the Iraqi government. And the rate at which Iraqis are being displaced is increasing. Figures given to the BBC by the Ministry for Displacement and Migration show a doubling in the last two weeks of the number of Iraqis forced to move. There has been a sharp rise in sectarian violence since the bombing of an important Shia shrine in February. Natural light to reinvent bulbs |
A natural light source that could put the traditional light bulb in the shade has been invented by US scientists. The organic light-emitting diode (OLED) emits a brilliant white light when attached to an electricity supply. The material, described in the journal Nature, can be printed in wafer thin sheets that could transform walls, ceilings or even furniture into lights. The OLEDs do not heat up like today's light bulbs and so are far more energy efficient and should last longer. "We're hoping that this will lead to significantly longer device times lifetimes in addition to higher efficiency," said Professor Mark Thompson of the University of Southern California, one of the authors of the paper.... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4906188.stm

White House admits Iraq WMDs error |
The White House has acknowledged for the first time that a key moment in post-war Iraq, the declaration by George Bush that "we have found the weapons of mass destruction", was based on intelligence known in Washington to be false. The president's assertion on May 29 2003 that Saddam Hussein's arsenal had been located was based on the capture of two trailers claimed to be mobile biological warfare labs. In Mr Bush's TV interview that day, and for months afterwards, US officials used them to justify the invasion. However, the Washington Post yesterday reported that the Pentagon had sent nine US and British weapons experts to Iraq to examine the trailers, who concluded they had nothing to do with biological weapons, and transmitted their finding to Washington on May 27 2003.In response to the paper, the White House spokesman, Scott McClellan, yesterday admitted Mr Bush had used false information but said he had been unaware of the fact, and called the reporting "irresponsible".... http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,,1752753,00.html
