An Iranian official warned Sunday that Tehran would not remain passive if the West imposes sanctions against it over its disputed nuclear program, but did not say how the country would respond. "Sanctions will have an impact on both sides and will have regional and international repercussions. If they choose sanctions we will decide accordingly," Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammed Ali Hosseini told journalists in a weekly briefing. A draft resolution on Iran is expected to be introduced in the U.N. Security Council within days, and diplomats have said they would seek limited sanctions against Tehran for refusing to suspend uranium enrichment. Hosseini did not elaborate on what actions Iran might take in response to sanctions. When asked, however, if Tehran could affect the movement of oil through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, through which some 20 percent of the world's supply passes every day, he replied, that "depends on the kind of sanctions." ... http://abcnews.go.com censor News |

Schroeder says Bush's religious talk worried him |
Ex-German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has written in a new book that George W. Bush's frequent references to God in their meetings before the Iraq war had made him wary of the U.S. president's political decisions. Schroeder wrote in an advance excerpt of his memoirs that Germany had stood by its vow of "unlimited solidarity" after the September 11 attacks in 2001. But Germany stayed out of Iraq, causing a breach in U.S.-German ties. He said in "Decisions: My Life in Politics," published on Sunday in Der Spiegel magazine, he was alarmed by Bush's talk of God, which made him fear religion influenced decisions. "What worried me, despite a relaxed atmosphere to our talks, and to a certain degree what made me sceptical was how much it came through that this president saw himself as 'God-fearing' and saw that as the highest authority," Schroeder wrote. ... http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=2596600

N Korea links tests to 'pressure' |
North Korea will not carry out a second nuclear test unless "harassed" by the US, according to media reports in South Korea and Japan. Sources familiar with a briefing given by a Chinese envoy after talks with the North's leader said Kim Jong-il wanted a nuclear-free Korean peninsula. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice earlier expressed doubts that Mr Kim had made any pledges on future tests. She is heading home after an Asian tour to bolster UN sanctions on the North. The reports carried by Japan's Kyodo news agency and the Yonhap agency in South Korea quoted separate sources familiar with the briefing given by Chinese envoy Tang Jiaxuan to other countries after his talks last week in Pyongyang. Both reports said that Mr Kim told Mr Tang there were no plans to add to the nuclear test of 9 October but that the North would respond to US pressure. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6075002.stm

Bombs ripped through a Baghdad market and a bakery on Sunday as shoppers were stocking up on sweets and other delicacies to celebrate a major Muslim holiday, and at least five people were killed, police said. The carnage in the Shurja wholesale market, Baghdad's oldest and largest, was the second time in two days that open-air shopping places have been targeted. On Saturday, at least 19 people were killed and scores were wounded in a bomb and mortar attack on a market in Mahmoudiyah, just south of the capital. Iraq's main Sunni political bloc, the Iraqi Islamic Party, issued a statement Sunday blaming the Mahdi Army for provoking the violence in that city, 20 miles south of Baghdad. ... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=2596384

Official: Israel used phosphorous bombs |
The Israeli army dropped phosphorous bombs against Hezbollah guerrilla targets in Lebanon during a war there this summer, an Israeli official said Sunday, confirming Lebanese allegations for the first time. Until now, Israel had said it only used the weapons — which cause severe chemical burns — to mark targets or territory, the Israeli daily Haaretz reported. But last week, Cabinet minister Jacob Edery confirmed during a parliamentary query session that Israel had used the weapons during August fighting against Hezbollah, his spokeswoman, Orly Yehezkel, said. Edery was speaking on behalf of Defense Minister Amir Peretz, she said. "The Israeli army holds phosphorous munitions in different forms," Haaretz quoted Edery as saying. "The Israeli army made use of phosphorous shells during the war against Hezbollah in attacks against military targets in open ground."... http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2006-10-22-israel-lebanon_x.htm?csp=34
