Inflation risks and global trade imbalances mean the world economy faces "testing times", the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said. Deadlocked trade talks are another challenge Rodrigo de Rato added, ahead of a series of IMF and World Bank meetings in Singapore. World Bank head Paul Wolfowitz, meanwhile, has branded Singapore as "authoritarian" for banning protestors. More than 160 groups have boycotted the talks over the move. They include leading non-governmental organisations who were accredited for the talks, including Friends of the Earth. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk censor News |

Mexico Moves Independence Day Bash Away From Mexico City Square to Avoid Leftist Sympathizers |
President Vicente Fox backed down from a confrontation with thousands of leftist sympathizers of Manuel Lopez Obrador, moving Friday's annual Independence Day celebration away from Mexico City's main square to avoid protesters. The decision prompted Lopez Obrador to declare victory in his battle against July 2 elections he claims were stolen from him by fraud. His supporters plan to throw their own Independence Day party in Mexico City's Zocalo square, which they have occupied for weeks. "We are very happy because the traitor to democracy will not be here tomorrow," the former Mexico City mayor told cheering sympathizers Thursday. Lopez Obrador claims Fox rigged the presidential vote in favor of conservative Felipe Calderon and had called on his supporters to turn their backs when Fox made the annual salute of "Viva Mexico!" ... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=2448449

EU talks on Palestinian embargo |
European Union foreign ministers are due to meet to discuss the aid embargo on the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority. France has said the formation of a Palestinian national unity government should prompt a rethink of the embargo, imposed after Hamas won elections. This contrasts with the reaction in Washington, which has insisted the aid freeze should remain in place. Talks between political factions on the make up of a national unity government are continuing. Hamas and the Fatah faction led by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas struck a deal on Monday on the programme of a national unity government. The UN and aid agencies have warned that the aid embargo has left the Palestinian economy close to collapse, and in Gaza, contributed to a severe humanitarian crisis. The embargo was imposed after the Islamist militant organisation Hamas, which refuses to recognise Israel and renounce violence, won January's elections. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/5347710.stm

Chavez To Back Iran If U.S. Invades Venezuelan President To Iranian President: 'We Are With You' |
Venezuela's president pledged Thursday his country would support Iran if it was invaded as a result of its nuclear standoff with the United Nations Security Council. The U.N. has demanded Iran suspend uranium enrichment amid concerns by some nations that it could be used for nuclear weapons. Iran insists the enrichment is aimed solely at producing electricity. “Iran is under threat; there are plans to invade Iran, hopefully it won't happen, but we are with you,” Hugo Chavez told Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at a meeting of the Group of 15 developing nations on the sidelines of a Nonaligned Movement summit in Cuba. Chavez said Venezuela stands with Iran in this time of crisis, just as it stood by Cuba, where Fidel Castro handed over power to his brother Raul while recovering from intestinal surgery. If they don't defend each other, no one else will, Chavez said. ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/09/14/world/main2011351.shtml?source=RSSattr=World_2011351

Judge: 'You should never have been a mother' |
A woman who forced her stepchildren to gorge themselves on food and drink, then eat their own vomit has been sentenced to two to six years in prison.Venus Critchfield, 35, of Philippi, West Virginia, was also accused of beating the children's feet with boards, and using ropes and hooks to force them to stand for long periods, said Taylor County Prosecutor John Bord.Circuit Judge Alan D. Moats called the abuse one of the worst cases he's seen in 30 years."You are like the proverbial wicked stepmother of fairy tales," he said. "You should never have been a mother; you are the antithesis of everything that is a mother."The abuse began around 1997 and was "chronic, repeated and escalating," the prosecutor said. It involved all six of Critchfield's children and stepchildren over time, Bord said, but only some of the children were willing to testify against her.... http://www.cnn.com/2006/LAW/09/14/food.abuse.ap/index.html?section=cnn_us
