Five new human cases of bird flu have been identified in several Turkish provinces, pushing the number of infected up to 14, officials say. The cases, confirmed by Turkey as being of the deadly H5N1 strain, mean the virus is now present in the east, north and centre of the country. At least two Turkish children have died and correspondents say fear is spreading rapidly across the country. But the WHO says there is no sign the virus is passing from human to human. The two siblings confirmed to have died of bird flu in the eastern town of Dogubeyazit, in the province of Van, had close contact with poultry. Tests are still being carried out on their 11-year-old sister, who also died, to see if she was also infected with H5N1. Their brother, the sole surviving sibling of the family, was released from hospital on Monday. Tests indicated six-year-old Ali Hasan Kocyigit did not have the virus. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk censor News |

China Revises 2004 Economic Growth Rate Upward to 10.1 Percent, From 9.5 Percent |
China has revised its 2004 economic growth rate to 10.1 percent from 9.5 percent following the recent completion of an economic census, the National Statistics Bureau reported Monday. China's gross domestic product grew a feverish 9.8 percent for all of 2005, the official Xinhua News Agency reported earlier, citing the National Development and Reform Commission. That estimate, issued just after the New Year, likely will be revised when official data are released months later. China had reported in late December that based on the census, the size of the entire economy was about 20 percent bigger than previously thought because it had underestimated the services sector. Since then, the government has gradually released figures for various years.... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=1486207

Suicide Bombers Attempt Attack at Police Celebration; One Shot, Other Explodes Vest, Killing 29 |
Two suicide bombers tried to attack National Police Day celebrations Monday, with police shooting one dead and the other exploding his vest, killing 29 people, police and the U.S. military said. The U.S. ambassador and Iraq's interior and defense ministers were in attendance but were far from the attacks. An Internet statement by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in the name of his al-Qaida in Iraq terrorist group rebuked Sunni Arabs for taking part in last month's parliamentary elections, saying they had "thrown a rope" to save U.S. policy. Meanwhile, the U.S. military said eight U.S. troops and four American civilians died aboard a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter that crashed late Saturday in northern Iraq. The military initially said only that there were eight passengers and four crew aboard.... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=1486094&CMP=OTC-RSSFeeds0312

Scandal of force-fed prisoners |
New details have emerged of how the growing number of prisoners on hunger strike at Guantánamo Bay are being tied down and force-fed through tubes pushed down their nasal passages into their stomachs to keep them alive. They routinely experience bleeding and nausea, according to a sworn statement by the camp's chief doctor, seen by The Observer. 'Experience teaches us' that such symptoms must be expected 'whenever nasogastric tubes are used,' says the affidavit of Captain John S Edmondson, commander of Guantánamo's hospital. The procedure - now standard practice at Guantánamo - 'requires that a foreign body be inserted into the body and, ideally, remain in it.' But staff always use a lubricant, and 'a nasogastric tube is never inserted and moved up and down. It is inserted down into the stomach slowly and directly, and it would be impossible to insert the wrong end of the tube.' ... http://observer.guardian.co.uk/world/story/0,16937,1681736,00.html
