Cuba's "Miami Five" claim that America has jailed them for fighting terror |
It would be almost impossible to travel in Cuba and be unaware of the "Five Heroes" or the "Miami Five". Their photos stare out from roadside billboards, stickers calling for their release adorn the dashboards of Havana taxis and their names are constantly evoked by the Cuban media. They are the current symbols of the half century of conflict between Cuba and the United States. The five, Fernando Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino and Rene Gonzalez were dispatched by the Cuban government in the early nineties. Their task was to infiltrate the anti-Castro Cuban exile groups in Miami, who were believed to be engaged in acts of sabotage against Cuba. They took on different jobs, some lowly, and joined the groups, passing themselves off as part of the disgruntled diaspora anxious to remove Castro... http://www.guardian.co.uk/cuba/story/0,,1837499,00.html?gusrc=rss&feed=12

What's the real federal deficit? How many billions (or trillions) of dollars depends on how you do the accounting |
The set the government promotes to the public has a healthier bottom line: a $318 billion deficit in 2005. The set the government doesn't talk about is the audited financial statement produced by the government's accountants following standard accounting rules. It reports a more ominous financial picture: a $760 billion deficit for 2005. If Social Security and Medicare were included — as the board that sets accounting rules is considering — the federal deficit would have been $3.5 trillion. Congress has written its own accounting rules which would be illegal for a corporation to use because they ignore important costs such as the growing expense of retirement benefits for civil servants and military personnel. Last year, the audited statement produced by the accountants said the government ran a deficit equal to $6,700 for every American household. The number given to the public put the deficit at $2,800 per household... http://www.usatoday.com/printedition/news/20060803/1a_coverart03.art_dom.htm

Lebanon Oil Spill Threatens Eastern Mediterranean Coasts |
An oil spill seeping from a Lebanese power station that was bombed by Israeli jets threatens to pollute countries in the eastern Mediterranean such as Cyprus and Turkey, Lebanon's environment minister said in Beirut. ``As soon as we had the outburst of the first spill, we thought of the potential danger that this spill will have on the whole Mediterranean,'' Yacoub Sarraf said in an interview. The spill was caused by the bombing of oil storage units at the Jiyyeh power plant, 30 kilometers (19 miles) south of Beirut, in the early days of Israel's campaign against the Hezbollah between July 13 and 15. About 10,000 tons of oil has escaped and up to 35,000 tons may finally seep out, the United Nations' International Maritime Organization said. Israel has bombed airports, ports, bridges, roads and other facilities in Lebanon, inflicting losses estimated at more than $4 billion, according to the Lebanese government. ... http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aw92uvXiSPNM&refer=top_world_news

Another Mass Dog Slaughter in China to Control Rabies |
A second Chinese city plans a mass dog slaughter to control a rabies outbreak, state media said Friday, days after a similar cull in which dogs were beaten to death prompted a torrent of criticism.
