Hezbollah leaders vowed this week to lead the reconstruction of Lebanon but insisted that they will hold on to their guns as they rebuild their shattered homeland -- a neat symbol of the checkered and contradictory role that the Islamist movement has played almost since its inception. The militant Shi'ite group pulled off a string of spectacular attacks on U.S. and Western military and diplomatic sites in the 1980s, and launched bloody attacks on the Israeli Embassy and a Jewish cultural center in Buenos Aires in the 1990s. It trains and equips Palestinian militant groups targeting Israel. Hezbollah now stands accused of provoking a monthlong war with Israel that has left much of Lebanon in ruins and hundreds of civilians dead on both sides of the border. ... http://www.washingtontimes.com censor News |

Iraq Doubles Money Allocated for Oil Imports Because of Worst Fuel Shortage Since '03 Invasion. We were told Iraq Oil would pay for our invasion, and they can’t even supply enough for Iraq. |
Iraq has doubled the money allocated for importing oil products in August and September to tackle the country's worst fuel shortage since Saddam Hussein's 2003 ouster, a senior Iraqi official said Thursday. Even though Iraq has the world's third-largest proven oil reserves, it is forced to depend on imports because of an acute shortage of refined products such as gasoline, kerosene and cooking gas. Sabotage of pipelines by insurgents, corruption and aging refineries have been blamed. Falah Alamri, head of the State Oil Marketing Organization, which is responsible for Iraq's imports of oil products, said the money normally allocated by the government to buy oil products was doubled in August, to $426 million. The normally allocated amount would be doubled for September, too, Alamri told Dow Jones Newswires. A gallon of gasoline now sells on the black market in Baghdad for about $4.92, although its official price is $0.64. ... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=2324463

Hunt for Ethiopia flood survivors |
Search and rescue teams are scouring flood waters in southern Ethiopia as bad weather continues to hamper a round-the-clock hunt for survivors. The number of deaths has risen to 364 after the Omo river and tributaries burst their banks - with fears the toll countrywide could now top 800. Local Ethiopian officials are appealing for assistance saying they cannot cope with the scale of the flooding. A southern relief official told the BBC that at least 6,000 were at risk. Disaster co-ordinator in the Omo region, Deftalgne Tessema, told the BBC's Network Africa programme that despite help from the federal government and the UN, so far just 14 motorboats were trying to evacuate people from islands cut off by the swollen waters.
