Palestinian militant group Hamas has won a parliamentary vote of confidence, clearing the way for it to take power. The new administration will be sworn in on Wednesday, two months after Hamas' surprise election victory. Incoming Prime Minister Ismail Haniya said this week that Hamas was ready to talk to international mediators about solving the Middle East conflict. But the group rejects international pressure to renounce violence and recognise Israel's right to exist. Western donors are threatening to halt aid to the Palestinian Authority unless Hamas amends its anti-Israel policies. The Palestinian parliament voted 71-36 to approve Hamas' government agenda and cabinet list. There were two abstentions. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk censor News |

We Hire Illegal Immigrants Web Site Tracks Employers Providing Day Labor Jobs |
Much like the day laborers they track, activists in Lake Forest, Calif., start their day before 7 a.m. Armed with cameras, they try to shame employers who pick up illegal immigrants into stopping by posting the employers' photographs on the Web site WeHireAliens.com. They greet employers with signs saying, "Hiring a day laborer? Say cheese!" Far from the theoretical debates on Capitol Hill, WeHireAliens.com is just one of many loosely affiliated citizens groups working against illegal immigration across the country. The group congregates at day laborer sites from Herndon, Va., to Lake Forest, Calif., south of Los Angeles. One employer in a pickup truck with two laborers called the group's tactics harassment. ... http://abcnews.go.com/WNT/US/story?id=1773361&CMP=OTC-RSSFeeds0312

Italian PM Berlusconi Says Country Must Not Become 'Multiethnic, Multicultural Country' |
Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said he does not want Italy to become a multiethnic, multicultural country, drawing plaudits from a right-wing ally and criticism from center-left opponents. Berlusconi, a conservative, faces a stiff challenge in next month's national election, with opinion polls putting him behind his opponent, former premier Romano Prodi. The poor economy, a main worry for voters in this election, has fed concerns about immigration by right-wing parties in Berlusconi's coalition, although the kind of work usually done by immigrants is shunned by many Italians. Surveys show that some Italians also perceive immigrants as being linked to crime. "We don't want Italy to become a multiethnic, multicultural country. We are proud of our traditions," Berlusconi said Monday on state-run radio. ... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=1776441

Two Dozen Iraqi Workers Kidnapped |
Three groups of gunmen kidnapped at least 24 Iraqis working at a currency exchange and two electronics stores in Baghdad on Tuesday, the interior ministry said. South of the capital, a car bomb exploded as police exchanged fire with two suicide bombers at a police station, wounding at least a dozen people. The attacks follow two days of violence in Iraq that left at least 151 dead, including 16 people killed Sunday in a military assault on what Iraqis claim was a mosque. Shiite politicians halted negotiations on a new government in response to the assault. The abductions in Baghdad happened separately but within the same half-hour period, the ministry said. Fifteen gunmen wearing military uniforms but arriving in civilian cars stormed the Moussa Bin Nasir Exchange Co. in the southwest Harthiyah neighborhood at about 1 p.m., kidnapping six people and stealing tens of thousands of dollars, police said. ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/02/24/iraq/main541815.shtml?source=RSS&attr=World_541815
