Aid sent to Peru volcano evacuees |
Peruvian authorities have been sending aid to hundreds of evacuees after declaring a state of emergency in the area near the erupting Ubinas volcano. Gas and cinder began spewing from the 5,672-metre (18,609-ft) volcano in southern Peru three weeks ago. Tonnes of aid, particularly tents, water and powdered milk, have been shipped into the affected zone. The army has been brought in to help evacuate nearby villages, although some residents are reluctant to leave. Two planes collide midair, killing 5 |
Two small planes collided midair Sunday about 20 miles north of Anchorage, killing all five people aboard, officials said.A man and his three children in a Cessna 170B and the pilot of a Cessna 172 were killed in the wreck just after noon, according to National Transportation Safety Board investigator Clint Johnson. Hundreds of police and soldiers surrounded the Solomon Islands parliament, for its first meeting since the outbreak of violence last week. The election of Snyder Rini as prime minister last Tuesday triggered riots over claims that either China or Taiwan had paid lawmakers to vote for him. Many Chinese businesses were looted during the violence, and parts of the capital Honiara were left in ruins. Hundreds of ethnic Chinese have since left the country. Ahead of Monday's session, heavily-armed police and military guarded the roads leading to the parliament building.
