Warplanes from Greece and Turkey collided over the Aegean Sea island of Karpathos as they shadowed each other Tuesday, and officials said the Turkish pilot was rescued unhurt and a search was launched for the Greek pilot.Fighter planes from the two NATO allies frequently intercept each other over the Aegean, mostly in areas of disputed airspace. The Turkish military identified both planes as F-16 fighter jets and said the Turkish pilot, 1st Lt. Halil Ibrahim Ozdemir, was rescued by a merchant ship. Greek authorities said a search was under way for the pilot of the Greek plane. Authorities in Greece initially said there were two Turks aboard the Turkish plane, but later said only one was aboard. The government in Ankara only made reference to Ozdemir.“It appears the incident occurred while the Greek plane was intercepting the Turkish jet,” Greek government spokesman Evangelos Antonaros said.... http://www.msnbc.msn.com censor News |

White House says conditions will dictate Iraq pullout. Yep when Americans will no longer swallow all the lies or accept all the dead and maimed it will end. |
Despite optimism triggered by formation of Iraq's unity government, the White House stressed on Tuesday conditions on the ground in Iraq will dictate when U.S. troops can withdraw. The statement came as the White House announced that President George W. Bush will meet his top Iraq war ally, British Prime Minister Tony Blair, on Thursday. Blair said on Monday that all foreign troops may be gone from Iraq within four years and Iraq's new prime minister, Nuri al-Maliki, said his forces could be in charge of most of the country by December. White House spokesman Tony Snow was careful not to sign on to any timetable, saying "the conditions on the ground are going to determine when the United States begins doing troop withdrawals and that sort of thing, and that and that alone is going to be the ultimate factor." ... http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=1994173

New Violence in Iraq Leaves 23 People Dead, Including 5 Killed in Car Bomb Outside Police Station |
New violence across Iraq on Tuesday killed 23 people, including five who died when a car bomb exploded at the entrance to a police station in Baghdad's biggest Shiite neighborhood, officials said. The deaths came a day after new Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and Britain's visiting leader, Tony Blair, announced that Iraqi security forces would start assuming full responsibility for some provinces and cities next month, beginning a process that could lead to the eventual withdrawal of all coalition forces. They said "responsibility for much of Iraq's territorial security should have been transferred to Iraqi control" by December. At that point, al-Maliki said, two of the most violent provinces, Baghdad and Anbar, may be the last where coalition forces maintain control. But some of Tuesday's violence showed that goal may not be easy to achieve. A car bomb was detonated in the late afternoon outside a police station in Sadr City, ... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=1994197

Agency Report Thrashes Fannie Mae Alleges Mortgage Giant Manipulated Accounting, Deceived Investors, Stonewalled Regulators |
Employees at mortgage giant Fannie Mae manipulated accounting so that executives could collect millions in bonuses as senior management deceived investors and stonewalled regulators at a company whose prestigious image was phony, a federal agency charged Tuesday. The blistering report by the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight, the product of an extensive three-year investigation, was issued as the government-sponsored company struggles to emerge from an $11 billion accounting scandal. Earlier, a person familiar with the situation said that Fannie Mae was being fined between $300 million and $500 million for the alleged manipulation of accounting to facilitate executives' bonuses, in a settlement with the housing oversight agency. The Wall Street Journal reports Fannie Mae will be required to pay $400 million.... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/05/23/business/main1644382.shtml?source=RSS&attr=U.S._1644382

Israel captures Hamas commander |
Israeli forces have captured the leader of Islamic group Hamas' military wing in the West Bank in a raid in Ramallah. Israel accuses Ibrahim Hamad, 41, of masterminding a string of suicide bombings, including attacks on cafes and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Hamas took over Palestinian government in March after winning parliamentary elections in January. It launched some of the biggest attacks against Israel, but it has been holding an informal truce for 15 months. Mr Hamad was made leader of the Izzedine al-Qassam brigades in the West Bank in December 2003 and Israel says he is behind the deaths of scores of Israeli citizens and five Americans. Shortly before the arrest, Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniya told an Israeli newspaper that Hamas would observe a long-term ceasefire if Israel withdrew to its pre-1967 borders. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/5007242.stm

DR Congo warning over bodyguards |
Congolese politicians have been warned that they should not have more than 25 bodyguards, amid pre-election tension. The warning was made by Defence Minister Adolphe Onusumba, amid reports that some politicians have hundreds of armed personal guards. The limit was part of the Democratic Republic of Congo's 2002 peace deal to end the five-year conflict. Fighters from the warring factions are being integrated into the national army ahead of the poll set for 30 July. Mr Onusumba's statement made no mention of the estimated 10,000 soldiers in President Joseph Kabila's Republican Guard. Diplomatic sources say these troops are far better paid and equipped than soldiers in the regular army. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/5009310.stm
