Hackers steal AT&T customer data |
Hackers have obtained the credit card details of almost 19,000 online shoppers from telecoms giant AT&T. The US company said it had notified shoppers at its online store of the security breach, which affected people buying high-speed DSL internet items. Security was breached at the weekend, the company said, and online stores were quickly shut down in response. AT&T said it would reimburse customers for any fraudulent transactions and pay for any necessary credit services. There were no indications that fraudulent transactions had been carried out before the stolen information came to light, AT&T said. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/5297710.stm

Rumsfeld warns against 'appeasement' |
Defense Secretary Rumsfeld said yesterday the world faces "a new type of fascism" and warned against repeating the pre-WWII mistake of appeasement. He alluded to critics of the Bush admin's war policies in terms associated with the failure to stop Nazi Germany in the 1930s, which the Pentagon chief called "a time when a certain amount of cynicism & moral confusion set in among the Western democracies." Without explicitly citing Bush's critics at home or abroad, he said "it is apparent that many have still not learned history's lessons." Aides to Mr. Rumsfeld said later he was not accusing the administration's critics of trying to appease the terrorists but was cautioning against a repeat of errors made in earlier eras. If we learned anything from history we wouldn’t be invading other countries using almost the same tactics as Hitler, like lies, fear, and mindless false patriots supporting a government even when wrong. So what have we learned from history? Not a dam thing ... http://www.washingtontimes.com/national/20060830-123139-6294r.htm

Olmert faces Israeli flak for Lebanon war |
Israel's bitter domestic debate in the wake of the war in Lebanon shows no signs of slowing, despite embattled Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's call for a limited commission to review the government's handling of the conflict. The internal recriminations have targeted both Mr. Olmert and top commanders of the Israel Defense Forces, long seen as a bulwark of a Jewish state surrounded by larger, hostile Arab neighbors. "They've destroyed the best army in the world," said Assaf Davidi, a 28-year-old reservist who fought in the 34-day war. "I don't trust these people to change the mistakes that were made." The debate raged even as U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan met with top Israeli officials in Jerusalem yesterday and said he hoped to quickly double the contingent of U.N. peacekeepers in southern Lebanon to 5,000. Mr. Annan, on a diplomatic tour of the region, said he would ask Mr. Olmert in a meeting today to lift Israel's seven-week air and sea blockade of Lebanon. ... http://www.washingtontimes.com/world/20060830-120245-8478r.htm

European Space Agency's First Lunar Mission Heads for Expected Crash Landing Sunday |
Europe's first mission to the moon is due to crash-land in a cloud of dust and rock Sunday, ending a three-year voyage that gathered data about the lunar surface and tested a new engine intended to propel future spacecraft to Mercury and other planets. The European Space Agency's SMART-1 should hit its target on a volcanic plain called the Lake of Excellence at 1:41 a.m. EDT, skimming low as it makes its final approach at 4,475 mph. Observatories on earth will try to capture images of the impact and the resulting debris cloud, and European space officials hope their study of the debris will provide information about the minerals present at the impact site. Even before the mission ends, however, ESA is already celebrating the main goal a successful test of the ion engine they hope to use for future interplanetary missions, such as the BepiColombo joint mission to Mercury with Japan's space agency slated for launch in 2013. ... http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireStory?id=2374616
