A lawsuit stemming from the jamming of Democratic phone lines in the November 2002 elections was filed after the statute of limitations expired and should be dismissed, Republicans argued in court Thursday. Lawyers for Republicans said the three-year statute of limitations had expired when state Democrats filed their complaint in late January. But state Democratic Party Chairwoman Kathy Sullivan testified in Hillsborough County Superior Court that Democrats did not know whom to sue until long after the actual phone-jamming, when information from a federal investigation became public. The hearing resumes Friday. The lawsuit, whose defendants include the Republican National Committee and the National Republican Senatorial Committee, seeks compensation for alleged GOP interference with phone systems amid a hotly contested U.S. Senate race between then-Gov. Jeanne Shaheen and Republican John Sununu. Sununu won by about 20,000 votes. ... http://abcnews.go.com censor News |

Iran says determined to make atomic fuel at home |
Iran said on Thursday it was determined to produce nuclear fuel on its territory in defiance of international calls to halt the work and accused the United States of trying to prevent a negotiated solution to its dispute with the West."Based on law, Iran has planned to produce 20,000 MW of nuclear electricity in the next 20 years and needs to produce nuclear fuel inside the country for those reactors," chief nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani said in a statement, read out on state television. He said Iran was still reviewing nuclear proposals backed by six nations and wanted talks to solve the dispute. But he said the United States "has been trying to create obstacles in the way of talks and a diplomatic solution to this issue"."Iran has no other way than to review its nuclear policies if confrontation is chosen, instead of talks," he said.... http://today.reuters.com/News/newsArticle.aspx?type=topNews&storyID=2006-07-20T100430Z_01_HAF034001_RTRUKOC_0_US-NUCLEAR-IRAN-LARIJANI.xml

Official loser in Mexico election to ignore result Lopez Obrador set to begin campaign of civil resistance; bishops urge calm |
Mexico’s leftist presidential candidate said Thursday that he would never recognize the results of the election he said he lost by fraud, and Catholic bishops called for a week of prayer to heal the divisions widened by the bitter dispute. Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador implied that the country could plunge into instability if courts don’t order a vote-by-vote recount. His supporters demonstrated outside an airline in the latest in a series of blockades and protests. Lopez Obrador lost the July 2 election to conservative ruling-party candidate Felipe Calderon by less than 0.6 percent, according to official vote tallies. He has called for a manual recount of all ballots and a campaign of civil disobedience. “The election for me is illegitimate,” Lopez Obrador said in a radio interview. “I am not going to recognize the results of a fraudulent election.” ... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13944197/

U.S. opposes Venezuela bid for U.N. council seat |
The United States is lobbying hard to block Venezuela's bid for a seat on the U.N. Security Council, fearful that Hugo Chavez, its fiercely anti-American president, will disrupt the body as it confronts hot issues such as Iran and Sudan. But interviews with some 15 diplomats of member states reveal substantial wariness about the U.S. effort, with the critics warning it could boomerang against the U.S. choice, Guatemala, when the General Assembly votes in October.A European diplomat, refusing to be identified further, saying he didn't want to anger the Americans, said lobbying against Venezuela would only gain it votes.... http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/americas/07/20/venezuela.un.ap/index.html?section=cnn_world

An American general said extremists were preparing "an all-out assault" on the capital in a decisive battle for the future of Iraq.Iraq's most influential Shiite cleric issued his strongest call yet for an end to Shiite-Sunni bloodletting, urging all Iraqis to wake up to the "danger threatening the future of the country" and stand "side-by-side against it."U.S. military spokesman Maj. Gen. William Caldwell said there had been an average of 34 attacks a day involving U.S. and Iraqi forces in and around the capital since Friday — up sharply from the daily average of 24 registered between June 14 and July 13."We have not witnessed the reduction in violence one would have hoped for in a perfect world," Caldwell told reporters. "The only way we're going to be successful in Baghdad is to get the weapons off the streets."... http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/iraq/2006-07-20-iraq_x.htm?csp=34
