Two days ago, Israeli officers along the border were saying that they were in control of Bint Jbail, the biggest Hezbollah stronghold within easy striking distance across the border and an important symbolic target. Hezbollah’s leader, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, celebrated Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon with a parade there 6 years ago. But when Israel sent in its elite Golani Infantry Brigade to secure the town before dawn on Wed, hundreds of soldiers were quickly pinned down by a Hezbollah ambush. 8 soldiers were killed almost immediately, and it took until early afternoon to move the dead and wounded 2 miles under heavy fire to a safe spot where they were picked up by helicopter and flown to a hospital in Haifa. ... http://www.nytimes.com censor News |

India could make 50 warheads under nuclear deal with Bush |
The US House of Representatives was set to vote yesterday on a nuclear deal with India that threatens to fuel a nuclear arms race in Asia. The deal, a centrepiece of the Bush administration's foreign policy, comes as the US is pressuring Iran and North Korea to halt their nuclear programmes. Under the deal, the US will sell India nuclear fuel and technology for civilian purposes, in exchange for India putting most of its reactors under international safeguards. But a former head of Indian intelligence has said publicly the deal will allow India to produce 50 more nuclear warheads a year than it can now, by freeing up existing uranium reserves for military use.The vote in Washington comes days after satellite photographs revealed Pakistan is building what analysts believe is a large reactor capable of producing enough plutonium for 50 warheads a year, a discovery which has led to fears of an intensified nuclear arms race between India and Pakistan.... http://news.independent.co.uk/world/asia/article1199351.ece

When heterosexuals are in the minority People in overwhelmingly gay Mass. resort town say turnabout not fair play |
Heterosexuals in this overwhelmingly gay resort town on the tip of Cape Cod are complaining that the oppressed have become the oppressors. Straight people say they have been taunted as "breeders." One woman who signed a petition against gay marriage says she was berated as a bigot by a gay man, and another complained that dog feces were left next to her car. "The gay community is not immune to having potential prejudices. We're all human, including gay people," said Tom Lang, director of knowthyneighbor.org, a nonprofit group that supports gay marriage. Provincetown, or P-town, has long attracted writers, artists and gays and lesbians, and is known as a place where people can feel free to be themselves — a seaside version of Greenwich Village. New England's unofficial gay capital has just 3,400 year-round residents, but summer tourism brings nearly 10 times as many people. Locals say the intolerance from those who have long pleaded for tolerance has been stirred, in part, by ... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14045538/

China warns Canada on award for Dalai Lama Commercial interests may be at stake with honor for Tibetan leader in exile |
An unhappy China said Wednesday that Canada’s decision to bestow honorary citizenship on the Dalai Lama could hurt commercial relations between the two countries, which have been steadily growing stronger. The Tibetan leader-in-exile, who fled his homeland in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule, is considered by Beijing to be a separatist.Canada’s Parliament unanimously approved the award of an honorary citizenship last month, which will be bestowed on the Dalai Lama when he visits Vancouver in early September. The honor will mark the third time Canada has bestowed honorary citizenship. The others are former South African President Nelson Mandela and Swedish businessman Raoul Wallenberg, who saved the lives of thousands of Jews in World War II.Zhang Weidong, political counselor at the Chinese embassy in Ottawa, said his officials had already complained to the Foreign Ministry about the award.... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14045372/

Reports: Israel bombing new sites in Lebanon 9 Israeli soldiers killed in fierce firefights; Hezbollah’s Tyre offices destroyed |
Israel hit an army base and an adjacent relay station belonging to Lebanese state radio at Aamchit, 30 miles north of Beirut, knocking down a transmission tower early Thursday, local broadcasters and witnesses said. It wasn’t immediately clear if the attack was by air or shelling from ships. The Israeli military had no immediate comment on the reports. The day before, Hezbollah dealt Israel its heaviest losses in the Lebanon campaign, killing nine soldiers in fierce firefights. With key Mideast players failing to agree on a formula for a cease-fire, an Israeli general said the operation could last weeks. Israel said it intends to damage Hezbollah and establish a “security zone” that would be free of the guerrillas and extend 1.2 miles into Lebanon from the Israeli border. Such a zone would prevent Hezbollah from carrying out cross-border raids such as the one two weeks ago that triggered the Israeli military response. ... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14021722/
