Erkki Tuomioja: ‘Europeans never believed there was a military solution to the conflict in Lebanon... Everyone always seems to think they have to come out in a position where they can declare military victory when in reality everyone has lost' Israel could be destroying Lebanon while leaving the guerrilla group Hizbullah intact, Finnish Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja said on Thursday. Tuomioja also said it was “Very frustrating” that it was so difficult to reach agreement on a ceasefire, because the Europeans never believed there was a military solution to the conflict in Lebanon, now in its fifth week.“ The real worry ... Is if you (Israel) set out to destroy Hizbullah, you may end up destroying Lebanon but leaving Hizbullah intact. Unfortunately that seems to have happened,” The minister, whose country holds the European Union’s rotating presidency, told Reuters in an interview. ... http://www.ynetnews.com censor News |

London Terrorism Arrests May Aid Republican Political Strategy. Very convenient coincidence |
The unraveling of a terrorist plot in London may bolster the Republican political strategy of presenting their party as best equipped to confront a dangerous world if the issue persists for the next three months. The arrests of 24 suspected terrorists in London are ``a stark reminder that this is a nation at war,'' President George W. Bush said yesterday in Green Bay, Wisconsin, where a planned talk about the economy was overtaken by the incident. Bush's biggest political liabilities are Iraq and rising gasoline prices, and public dissatisfaction with the president is threatening to drag down his Republican Party in the November congressional elections, polls show. The Republican political strategy has been to link the Iraq war with the battle against terrorism and to portray Democrats as weak on both counts. The foiled British plot may help Republicans, said Joe Gaylord, former executive director of the National Republican Congressional Committee. ... http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aP7aiBVd4oow&refer=top_world_news

Walking in fear in Lebanon's no-drive zone |
Moving anywhere in Lebanon south of the Litani River today is an eerie and unnerving experience. Since Monday, when Israeli jets dropped leaflets warning unequivocally that any vehicles daring to travel would be hit, there has been virtually no traffic on the roads. Not that there was much before. So in Tyre, the only way to move without that dire threat hanging over you, is to walk. And even that is hardly comfortable. Often the only sound is the buzz of the drones, small pilotless reconnaissance aircraft that are rarely seen but always heard as they scan every inch, transmitting laser-sharp images to someone, somewhere, who you hope is in a good mood. Above that, the howl of aircraft cruising the skies which Israel masters unchallenged. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4781551.stm

COURT ORDERS FEDS TO STOP STALLING AND DELIST BALD EAGLE WITHIN SIX MONTHS |
Early delisting of the bald eagle from the Endangered Species Act list became almost a certainty today after a federal District Court in Minneapolis today set a deadline for the delisting. The ruling came in a case Contoski v. Scarlett brought by Pacific Legal Foundation, representing Minnesota landowner Edmund Contoski. PLF had asked the Court to order the United States Department of Interior to stop stalling and make good on its earlier promise to remove the bald eagle from "threatened" status under the ESA. The Court agreed with PLF and set February 16, as the government’s deadline for delisting.... http://Early delisting of the bald eagle from the Endangered Species Act list became almost a certainty today after a federal District Court in Minneapolis today set a deadline for the delisting. Web firms' China role criticised |
Further pressure was heaped on technology companies operating in China today when Human Rights Watch said many web firms had become complicit in politically repressive activities. The campaign group, based in New York, called the policies of Yahoo!, Google and Microsoft "arbitrary, opaque and unaccountable", and said users deserved to know more about the way they operated. The companies have argued that they are operating in accordance with local laws, but Human Rights Watch said they had often gone further in assisting the Chinese government. "It was ironic that companies whose existence depends on freedom of information and expression have taken on the role of censor, even in cases where the Chinese government makes no specific demands for them to do so," said the group in a report. ... http://www.guardian.co.uk/china/story/0,,1841951,00.html?gusrc=rss&feed=12

Baghdad clash 'defining' |
American troops clashed with Shi'ite militiamen yesterday in southwest Baghdad in what a U.S. general called a defining battle in the fight for security in the capital. By nightfall, residents said, families were hiding in their houses, huddled in the dark in whatever room was the farthest from the street in case the armed militia made good on shouted vows of revenge. "We woke up at 4:30 a.m. with two huge explosions, then we started hearing a firefight with hundreds of bullets being fired. It was like a war, and it came from all sides of the street," said one young man in the southwest Baghdad neighborhood of al Elam. He would identify himself only as Amer. Minutes afterward, perched on the roof, he saw three men running down the street. "They set down a mortar launcher stand just 10 [yards... http://www.washingtontimes.com/world/20060809-111550-7756r.htm
