Federal officials are investigating a possible safety breach involving two commercial planes at O'Hare International Airport, the third investigation of an apparent close call on the airfield's runways in less than a week. Federal Aviation Administration officials said Tuesday that they are trying to determine whether two planes that were preparing for takeoff on Sunday got closer than allowed under federal rules. An Airbus A320 plane had been cleared for takeoff at around 12:20 p.m. but was told to abort its takeoff four seconds later because another plane had been readying for takeoff on an intersecting runway, the FAA said. ... http://www.usatoday.com censor News |

Fed raises key rate, hints it's not done yet |
Federal Reserve policymakers boosted interest rates Tuesday for a 15th straight time to the highest level in five years and suggested a 16th rise may be in the cards. In his first meeting as Fed chairman, Ben Bernanke and his colleagues unanimously voted to raise their target for short-term interest rates a quarter percentage point to 4.75% in their bid to thwart inflation. That's the highest since March 2001, but still far below the recent peak of 6.5%. in mid-2000. In their post-meeting statement, Fed policymakers said the economy "rebounded strongly" after a slowdown at the end of last year, which they attributed to "temporary or special factors." Fed officials said economic growth would likely "moderate" to a healthy pace later this year. But they said a tight job market, in tandem with elevated energy prices and a high usage of available resources "have the potential" to stoke inflation. Therefore, the Fed officials repeated that "some further policy firming may be needed," ... http://www.usatoday.com/money/economy/fed/rates/2006-03-28-quarter-hike_x.htm

The former royals returned to Kabul after the fall of the Taliban regime in 2001. Rahman was released from prison Monday after a court dropped charges of apostasy against him because of a lack of evidence and suspicions he may be mentally ill. Nigeria Arrests, Deports Liberia's Ex-Leader Taylor |
The Nigerian government deported former Liberian president Charles Taylor, who's been indicted on war crimes charges, after arresting him as he attempted to flee the West African nation where he's been in exile for the past three years. Taylor, 58, was detained as he tried to leave Nigeria at the northeastern border town of Gamboru. A jet carrying him to Liberia's capital, Monrovia, left the northern city of Maiduguri about 2:00 p.m. local time, police spokesman Haz Iwendi said. Taylor vanished from his villa in the southeastern city of Calabar on March 27, two days after Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo said Liberia was free to take him ``into custody.'' News of the disappearance sparked criticism from U.S. lawmakers such as Vermont Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy, who called for the cancellation of President George W. Bush's meeting today with Obasanjo. ... http://quote.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000087&sid=a07I6EyDF2ik&refer=home

Indian doctor jailed after offering to abort girl baby |
An Indian court has sentenced a doctor to two years in prison for using ultrasound tests to determine the sex of unborn babies, a practice that has led to the abortion of millions of female foetuses. It is the first time any doctor has been convicted under a 1994 law banning sex-determination tests. Campaigners against selective abortion said they hoped it would send a message to doctors across India, where many clinics also treat British Asian women who want terminations.Anil Sabsani, a radiologist, was caught in a sting operation in 2001, telling an undercover investigator that she was carrying a female foetus but that her pregnancy could be "taken care of". Sabsani and his assistant, Kartar Singh, were sentenced yesterday to two years in prison and fined 5,000 rupees (£72) each. They were tried in Palwal, a city in Haryana state, south of New Delhi, where Sabsani had his practice... http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,3-2109373,00.html
