Workers across Europe hauled away fallen trees and repaired power lines Friday after the deadliest storm to strike the continent in eight years killed at least 47 people and caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage. Trains started rolling again after a near-total shutdown during Thursday night’s hurricane-force winds. Airports from London to Frankfurt reported some delays and cancellations, but were returning to normal. The disruption hit countries from Britain to Ukraine, where the flow of Russian oil through a key pipeline to Europe was temporarily halted after power to a pumping station was knocked out. The storm knocked out electricity to more than 1 million home in the Czech Republic, which was hit by winds of up to 112 mph. Ladislav Kriz, spokesman for the main Czech CEZ utility, said Friday night that power was restored to most of the homes affected by the storm, although about 170,000 customers were still without electricity.... http://www.msnbc.msn.com censor News |

Southern Plains Brace For New Winter Blast. Thousands Are Still Without Power From Earlier Storm, Up To 6 Inches More Snow Expected. This Global Warming is getting serious |
A storm carrying the threat of more snow and ice moved across the Southern Plains on Friday as more than 100,000 homes and businesses remained in the dark from earlier blasts of cold, wet weather. Winter storm warnings covered much of New Mexico and parts of Texas and Oklahoma, with a half-foot to more than a foot of snow and sleet expected. At a plaza in El Paso, Texas, where large crowds usually gather near bus stops and restaurants, only a few people braved the biting wind. "We prepared, getting all our winter clothes out, but it's difficult because the bus is late," said Alicia Lozano, 62, who wrapped a purple scarf around her head. ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/01/19/national/main2373778.shtml?source=RSSattr=U.S._2373778

Scientists Report Breakthrough in Battle Against Deadly 'Superbug' |
Scientists desperate to find a cure for a fast-spreading "superbug" that attacks the lungs of healthy young people with a deadly toxin that kills within 72 hours believe they've unlocked its secrets, according to a report published Friday in the journal "Science."The news comes just two days after a British biologist reported a possible breakthrough in the search for a cure for PVL-MRSA, a virulent and highly resistant strain of the relatively common Staphylococcus aureus bacteria — the staph infection commonly found in hospitals and locker rooms — that produces the toxin Panton Valentine leukocidin (PVL).Already responsible for two recent deaths in Britain, experts there and in the United States fear they are seeing the early stages in both countries of what already is the largest bacterial epidemic in the world.... http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,245042,00.html

Dozens of Pit Bulls Trained for Fighting Bite Workers, Intimidate Visitors at Ohio Shelter |
Dozens of pit bulls seized in dogfighting investigations have bitten workers at an animal shelter and generally behaved so badly that visitors are warned away from their cages. Most of the 72 dogs bark furiously at visitors, propelling their muscled bodies against cage bars and grabbing hold of coats of passers-by, said Mark Kumpf, director of the Montgomery County Animal Control Center. The dogs were confiscated in raids by police, starting in July. The animals have been housed by the county at a cost to taxpayers of about $60,000 as the cases go through the courts. Several workers at the animal center have been bitten, mostly breaking up fights between the dogs when they are removed from cages for cleaning or exercise, Kumpf said.... http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=2808013
