Gunmen in the Iraqi capital Baghdad have killed at least 40 people at a fake police checkpoint, in an apparent sectarian attack against Sunni Muslims. Police say Shia militants stopped cars in the western Jihad district, separated Sunnis and shot them. Later, at least 17 people died when two car bombs exploded near a Shia mosque in the capital, police said. There has been an upsurge in sectarian violence in Iraq in recent months, raising fears of a civil war. Sunni Arabs say government-backed Shia militias are behind many of the attacks. But officials have denied any involvement. The latest violence began on Sunday morning when Shia militiamen entered Jihad and set up roadblocks. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk censor News |

Hospital officials said six other people were wounded. They had initially said an Israeli shell struck the house. The little girl was carried inside the hospital, wrapped in a red blanket. The back of her head was sheared open, and her legs dangled lifelessly. Doctors bandaged the head of a trembling, blood-covered young boy, and treated a man whose right arm was almost completely torn off. The explosion occurred hours after the Hamas-led Palestinian government called for a cease-fire in its violent two-week standoff with Israel but stopped short of offering to release an Israeli soldier held by Hamas militants.... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13707036/#storyContinued
