The dollar posted its biggest weekly slide since June against the yen and euro after U.S. government reports signaled the U.S. economy is slowing. Traders drove the dollar lower the past three days against the yen, its longest slide since May, as they scaled back expectations for an 18th straight interest-rate increase by the Federal Reserve next month. The central bank lifted the overnight lending rate between banks to 5.25 percent last month. ``It's pretty evident the growth moderation story is getting some support,'' said Samarjit Shankar, director of global strategy for the foreign exchange group in Boston at Mellon Financial Corp. ``It does imply the dollar may be underperforming the euro and the yen.'' The dollar fell 1.3 percent this week to 114.65 yen and 0.5 percent $1.2759 per euro. It dropped this week against 13 of 16 major currencies tracked by Bloomberg. ... http://www.bloomberg.com censor News |

Four men were killed in one shooting and a fifth was gunned down in a separate incident hours later, the latest round of killings as the city struggles to rein in drug- and gang-related violence that has accompanied the recovery from Hurricane Katrina, police said Saturday. Kathleen Blanco sent the Louisiana National Guard and state police to New Orleans to help fight crime there after five teenagers were shot to death in a single attack. However, the latest shootings did not happen in the high-crime areas police have been targeting in their drive to stamp out the violence, police Superintendent Warren Riley said Saturday morning.... http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,206209,00.html

Israel will not demand Hizbollah disarm |
Israel will not demand the immediate disarming of Hizbollah as part of a deal to end the current fighting in Lebanon, a senior Israeli foreign ministry official said on Saturday.Israel's stance could make it easier to reach an agreement with major powers and the Lebanese government on the deployment of a peacekeeping force in south Lebanon. Hizbollah would almost certainly reject a peacekeeping force whose mandate calls for its disarmament. The foreign ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Israel would demand that the proposed peacekeeping force in south Lebanon keep Hizbollah away from the Israeli border and prevent the group from replenishing its stockpile of rockets from Syria and Iran. ... http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=2251489

U.S. Justice Department is investigating allegations that Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. deceived U.S. antitrust enforcers about an agreement to limit competition to the drugmaker's top-selling drug Plavix, people familiar with the matter said. The Federal Trade Commission, which was reviewing the proposed agreement to settle a patent dispute over the drug, sought a criminal investigation after officials at Apotex Inc., a Canadian generic-drug maker, contradicted statements Bristol- Myers made to the FTC, the people said. Hezbollah Politicians Back Peace Package, Increasing Pressure on U.S. to Call for a Cease-Fire |
Hezbollah politicians, while expressing reservations, have joined their critics in the government in agreeing to a peace package that includes strengthening an international force in south Lebanon and disarming the guerrillas, the government said. The agreement reached after a heated six-hour Cabinet meeting was the first time that Hezbollah has signed onto a proposal for ending the crisis that includes the deploying of international forces. The package falls short of American and Israeli demands in that it calls for an immediate cease-fire before working out details of a force and includes other conditions. But European Union officials said Friday the proposals form a basis for an agreement, increasing the pressure on the United States to call for a cease-fire. ... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=2249956
