Three Guantanamo Bay detainees who hung themselves in their cells received psychological exams days before their suicides and showed no signs of being depressed, a military doctor said Tuesday. The doctor suggested the exams, performed one to two weeks before the June 10 suicides, supported assertions by military officials that the prisoners killed themselves as a political act -- not because they were despondent about their prolonged detention."None had showed any signs of being depressed or having a mental condition," said the doctor, who is the medical officer in charge of the remote U.S. prison on Cuba's southeastern tip.He said he wished to speak on condition of anonymity to protect his personal safety. The three detainees -- two Saudis and a Yemeni -- were given psychological exams as a formality because they had recently participated in hunger strikes, including one who refused meals for 180 days.... http://www.cnn.com censor News |

Asian Stocks Fall By Most in 2 Weeks on Fed; Honda Leads Slide |
Asian stocks fell by the most in two weeks, extending a global slump, on speculation the Federal Reserve will tomorrow raise U.S. interest rates and signal further increases. Honda Motor Co. and LG Electronics Inc. slid. BHP Billiton and Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. led shares of commodity suppliers lower on concern that higher borrowing costs around the world will reduce demand for metals. ``There will be concerns about rate hikes in August and even September,'' said Soichiro Monji, who helps oversee $47 billion as a strategist at Daiwa SB Investments Ltd. in Tokyo. ``Such ongoing rate hikes would negatively impact on the U.S. economy,'' resulting in decreased earnings for exporters. ... http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aHiFtwWz_Axc&refer=top_world_news

China finds 55 miners' bodies, fresh disaster hits |
China has finally recovered the bodies of 55 coal miners trapped underground by flooding over a month ago, the government said, as a fresh accident claimed 13 lives in the world's deadliest mining industry on Wednesday.Bodies of all but one of the miners trapped on May 18 in Zuoyun county in the northern province of Shanxi had been found by Tuesday night, China's top work safety watchdog said. "The search is still going on," the State Administration of Work Safety said on its Web site, www.chinasafety.gov.cn. State media said the first body had not been retrieved until June 14 as a large amount of water in the pits and an initial cover-up by the mine owners greatly hindered rescue efforts. ... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=2127442

Hamas takes step towards recognition of Israel |
Hamas bowed to the combination of an ultimatum from the Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, and relentless international pressure last night by committing itself for the first time to a two-state solution of the conflict with Israel. In an important step towards the recognition of Israel sought from Hamas by the international community, the Islamic faction agreed to a deal intended to pave the way for a new coalition government which Mr Abbas hopes will bolster his standing as a potential partner for peace negotiations with Israel. Faced with Mr Abbas's threat of a referendum next month on agreement to a two-state solution, Hamas agreed to a document based on that drawn up by a group of Fatah and Hamas prisoners which envisages a "final" settlement of the conflict with Israel. This is based on two states along the borders which existed before the 1967 occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. ... http://news.independent.co.uk/world/middle_east/article1115913.ece

Israel attacks 3 bridges, Gaza power station |
Palestinian security officials said Israeli planes fired five missiles at Gaza's only power station Wednesday, knocking out electricity in much of the coastal strip. Also, Israeli planes attacked three bridges in central Gaza, the military said Wednesday, and Israeli tanks were on the move after the government approved a limited operation — a response to a weekend Palestinian attack in which two soldiers were killed and a third captured. The Israeli military said in a statement that the object of the attacks on the bridges late Tuesday and early Wednesday was “to impair the ability of the terrorists to transfer the kidnapped soldier.” Knocking down the bridges would cut Gaza in two, Palestinian security officials said. No one mentions that this violates the Geneva Convention. Violation of the Geneva Convention is classified as a War Crime. But what is law now, other than the rule of the bigger gun ... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13580436/
