A POSTER of Ehud Olmert put up at a bus shelter in the Israeli settlement of Beit El said it all. The eyes of Tuesday’s election victor had been slashed out with a razor. A slogan calling for his elimination was scrawled across his face. As Mr Olmert’s Kadima party began haggling with potential coalition partners yesterday, the 5,000 Jews of Beit El and tens of thousands of others in the remoter West Bank settlements were filled with dismay. The Israeli electorate, inspired by the success of last year’s Gaza withdrawal, had handed power to a man determined to sacrifice the smaller West Bank settlements to save the largest.
