Experts create invisibility cloak |
A US-British team of scientists has successfully tested a cloak of invisibility in the laboratory. The device mostly hid a small copper cylinder from microwaves in tests at Duke University, North Carolina. It works by deflecting the microwaves around the object and restoring them on the other side, as if they had passed through empty space. But making an object vanish before a person's eyes is still the stuff of science fiction - for now. The cloak consists of 10 fibreglass rings covered with copper elements and is classed as a "metamaterial" - an artificial composite that can be engineered to produce a desired change in the direction of electromagnetic waves. Like visible light waves, microwaves bounce off objects, making them apparent and creating a shadow. But at microwave frequencies, the detection has to be made by instruments rather than the naked eye. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/6064620.stm

AP Interview: Georgian President Rules Out Use of Force to Control Separatist Regions |
Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili on Saturday ruled out the use of force to establish control over two pro-Russian separatist regions. He also said Tbilisi remained open to dialogue with Moscow to reduce tension that has been rising sharply since the former Soviet republic temporarily detained four purported Russian spies last month. "We certainly, absolutely, categorically are not starting any military confrontation," Saakashvili told The Associated Press. "Georgians' long term strategy is simple," Saakashvili said. "No fast solutions … any short-term solution would be beneficial to the people who want trouble." His comments were a rebuttal to Russian President Vladimir Putin's assertion at a summit with European Union leaders on Friday that Georgia was planning to take back South Ossetia and Abkhazia by military means. ... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=2594217

Iraq Shi'ite militias clash with police again |
Men loyal to Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr clashed with police near Baghdad on Saturday, one day after hundreds of Sadr's militiamen attacked police stations and battled Iraqi forces in a town further south. The violence in the oil-rich Shi'ite heartland is testing the ability of Iraq's Shi'ite-led government to rein in militias and other armed groups accused of fomenting violence that has pushed Iraq close to civil war.The escalation in Shi'ite infighting threatens to further deteriorate the security situation in Iraq, where Shi'ites and Sunnis are engaged in a vicious sectarian conflict and insurgents are battling both Iraqi government and U.S. troops. It also comes amid a rising U.S. death toll in Iraq and as the United States gears up for mid-term elections in which voter discontent over the White House's handling of the war has emerged as a top issue.... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20061021/ts_nm/iraq_dc
