Top U.S. general: Iraqis can take over security with little support within 18 months |
The top U.S. general in Iraq said Wednesday he believes Iraqi forces can take over security with little coalition support within a year to 18 months."I don't have a date, but I can see over the next 12 to 18 months, the Iraqi security forces progressing to a point where they can take on the security responsibilities for the country, with very little coalition support," Gen. George Casey said in Baghdad. That takeover would not mean U.S. troops leaving immediately. It is part of a U.S. military plan to hand over responsibilities, move into large bases and provide support while Iraqis take the lead. A U.S. drawdown would start after that occurred.Although the United States has made its strategy public, U.S. officials rarely mention dates or details.Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has already said that Iraqi army and police plan to take over security for all of Iraq's provinces within the next 18 months.... http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/iraq/2006-08-30-iraq-security_x.htm?csp=34

Gaza airstrikes, clashes leave 6 dead |
Israeli forces launched airstrikes on the outskirts of Gaza City and exchanged gunfire with Palestinian militants Wednesday, killing six people, officials said.Israeli forces have been searching for smuggling tunnels and explosives in Gaza City's Shijaiyeh neighborhood since the weekend and have killed a total of 16 Palestinians, most of them militants, doctors said.Among those killed Wednesday was a 14-year-old boy who was shot and killed as he gathered with a group of people to watch the fighting, hospital officials said. At least one of those killed was a gunman, doctors said.Troops also flattened crops, destroyed greenhouses and chicken coops and uprooted dozens of trees on Wednesday, residents said. The army had no comment on the report about the destruction. In recent years, troops have routinely destroyed farming areas and orchards in the Gaza Strip, citing the need to deprive gunmen and rocket squads of cover.... http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2006-08-30-gaza_x.htm?csp=34

Dozens killed in new Iraq attacks |
At least 50 people have died in a wave of attacks in Iraq, including a blast at a busy Baghdad market and another at an army and police recruitment centre. The bombing at the Shurja market killed 24 people and injured 35, police said. Other blasts and shootings left a total of 14 dead in the Iraqi capital, while in the town of Hilla, a bomb killed 12 men queuing to join the police. The Baghdad blasts come amid a joint US-Iraqi security clampdown that officials insist is working. The top US general in Iraq, George Casey, said on Wednesday he could see Iraqi forces taking on responsibility for the country's security within 12 to 18 months, with "very little" coalition support. But Baghdad's citizens probably do not feel the security clampdown is working, says the BBC's world affairs correspondent Nick Childs. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/5297384.stm

Iran enriching uranium ahead of U.N. deadline: paper |
Iran has begun enriching a new batch of uranium just days ahead of a U.N. deadline for Tehran to suspend atomic fuel work or face possible sanction, The Washington Post reported on Wednesday. The International Atomic Energy Agency, the Vienna-based U.N. nuclear watchdog, plans to disclose Iran's new enrichment work in a report due out on Thursday, the newspaper said, citing officials in Washington and European capitals who have been monitoring Iran's efforts. The newspaper said the officials stressed that Iran's new work involved small quantities of uranium being enriched to an extremely low level that could not be used for nuclear weapons. The U.N. Security Council has given Iran until Thursday to suspend uranium enrichment -- a process which can produce fuel for civilian reactors or material for nuclear bombs -- and has threatened to consider sanctions unless it does so.... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060830/ts_nm/nuclear_iran_dc

Olmert firm on Lebanon blockade |
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has rebuffed calls for a swift end to Israel's seven-week blockade of Lebanon. Speaking after talks with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, he said the siege would only be lifted once ceasefire terms were fully implemented. Mr Olmert said that one of the key conditions was the release of two Israeli soldiers captured by Hezbollah. A Hezbollah cabinet minister has said that there will be no unconditional release of the Israeli soldiers. Lebanese Energy Minister Mohammed Fneish said on Wednesday that such a release was "not possible", and that the pair would only be freed as a result of a prisoner exchange with Israel. "This is the principle to which Hezbollah and the resistance are adhering," he said. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/5297312.stm
