An undercover police officer put into the same cell as an alleged serial killer testified Monday that the jailed pig farmer voiced concerns about being "nailed to the cross" for dozens of suspected slayings. Jurors also were shown part of a video taken while the officer was in the cell with Robert William Pickton on Feb. 22, 2002, after the farmer was arrested in connection with at least two murders. Pickton is on trial for six alleged murders and is to be tried later on 20 additional murder counts. Most of the slain women were prostitutes or drug addicts among hundreds of women who disappeared from Vancouver's gritty Downtown Eastside neighborhood. He denies guilt. During opening arguments in late January, prosecutors told jurors the undercover officer coaxed Pickton into telling him about the murders. Pickton is alleged to have said he killed 49 women and had meant to make it "an even 50" but that his sloppiness led to his arrest.... http://abcnews.go.com censor News |

Republicans block Senate debate on Iraq |
Republicans blocked a full-fledged Senate debate over Iraq on Monday, but Democrats vowed they still would find a way to force Bush to change course in a war that has claimed the lives of more than 3,000 U.S. troops. "We must heed the results of the November elections and the wishes of the American people," said Majority Leader Harry Reid.Reid, D-Nev., spoke moments before a vote that sidetracked a nonbinding measure expressing disagreement with Bush's plan to deploy an additional 21,500 troops to Iraq. The vote was 49-47, or 11 short of the 60 needed to go ahead with debate, and left the fate of the measure uncertain.... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070205/ap_on_go_co/us_iraq

The real deal? Against the grain: Some scientists deny global warming exists |
Astrophysicist Nir Shariv, one of Israel's top young scientists, describes the logic that led him & most everyone else to conclude that SUVs, coal plants & other things man-made cause global warming. Step 1 Scientists for decades have postulated that increases in carbon dioxide & other gases could lead to a greenhouse effect. Step 2 As if on cue, the temperature rose over the course of the 20th century while greenhouse gases proliferated due to human activities. Step 3 No other mechanism explains the warming. Without another candidate, greenhouses gases necessarily became the cause. Dr. Shariv, a prolific researcher who has made a name for himself assessing the movements of 2-billion-year-old meteorites, no longer accepts this logic, or subscribes to these views. He has recanted: "Like many others, I was personally sure that CO2 is the bad culprit in the story of global warming. But after carefully digging into the evidence, I realized that things are far more complicated than the story sold to us... http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/story.html?id=156df7e6-d490-41c9-8b1f-106fef8763c6&k=0

Google blurs key images of India |
Google has agreed to blur some satellite images of India viewable via the Google Earth service. Citing security worries the Indian government has asked Google to reduce the detail in a selection of images. The government is drawing up a list of places it considers sensitive, which is expected to include military bases and government buildings. Many other areas in Google Earth have been blurred or censored at the request of other governments. The agreement to censor some locations viewable via Google Earth came out of a meeting between science and technology ministers from the Indian government and the search firm. In a report in the Times of India, the Indian government said that detailed plans of buildings and accurate maps could prove a boon to extremists. India's fears were first aired in 2005 - soon after the service launched.... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6331033.stm

Hundreds Gather for Los Angeles Street Baptism by Fire Hose |
Hundreds of worshippers lifted their heads and raised their hands as water blasted down from fire hoses during a symbolic street baptism in South Los Angeles. The mass baptism on Sunday was organized by the United House of Prayer for All People, one of the nation's largest black denominations, as part of its 80th annual Holy Convocation. The 3-million-member organization has held outdoor baptisms with fire hoses in Eastern cities such as New York and Philadelphia, but this was the first street baptism for California, according to church officials. "It's a baptizing for the city of Los Angeles," said Pearl Fuquay, who lost one son and is trying to raise another in a gang-racked neighborhood known as the Jungle. "It's a cleaning of the city." All members of the local organization were encouraged to take part, even those who had already been baptized.... http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,250330,00.html
