The Canadian government owes disabled war veterans more than C$4.6 billion ($3.95 billion) because it failed to invest their savings and pensions properly, a judge in Windsor, Ontario, ruled. The judgment is the biggest ever awarded in Canada in a contested lawsuit, David Greenaway, a lawyer representing the veterans, said at a news conference in Toronto today. Beginning in 1920, the government assumed responsibility for the savings and pensions of veterans who returned from war disabled and unable to manage their money. The veterans were generally placed in institutions, and their money went into an account that paid no interest until 1990, Greenaway said.
