The prime minister apologized Friday to a Syrian-born Canadian and said he would be compensated $8.9 million for Ottawa's role in his deportation by U.S. authorities to Damascus, where he was tortured and imprisoned for nearly a year. Prime Minister Stephen Harper again called on Washington to remove Maher Arar from its no-fly and terrorist watchlists. He reiterated that Canada would keep pressing the United States to clear Arar's name. "On behalf of the government of Canada, I want to extend a full apology to you and Monia as well as your family for the role played by Canadian officials in the terrible ordeal that you experienced in 2002 and 2003," Harper told reporters in Ottawa, referring to Arar's wife, Monia Mazigh, and their two children, who now live in British Columbia. ... http://www.cbsnews.com censor News |

"Hot" patients setting off radiation alarms |
When 75,000 football fans pack into Dolphin Stadium in Miami for the Super Bowl on February 4, at least a few may want to carry notes from their doctors explaining why they're radioactive enough to set off "dirty bomb" alarms. With the rising use of radioisotopes in medicine and the growing use of radiation detectors in a security-conscious nation, patients are triggering alarms in places where they may not even realize they're being scanned, doctors and security officials say.Nearly 60,000 people a day in the United States undergo treatment or tests that leave tiny amounts of radioactive material in their bodies, according to the Society of Nuclear Medicine. It is not enough to hurt them or anyone else, but it is enough to trigger radiation alarms for up to three months.... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070128/ts_nm/usa_radioactive_dc

Israeli Cabinet OKs first Muslim minister |
The Israeli government on Sunday approved the appointment of the country’s first Muslim Cabinet member, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s office said. The appointment of Raleb Majadele as a minister without portfolio is expected to go before parliament for final confirmation on Monday. Majadele, a parliamentary backbencher, says his appointment is meant to give representation to Israel’s Arabs, who make up about 20 percent of the country’s 7 million citizens. He has predicted that in future, every Israeli government will be obliged to include an Arab minister. Arabs lag behind Israel’s Jewish population in income, education and standard of living, and have long lacked representation in government commensurate with their numbers. Israel’s 120-seat parliament includes 13 Arab members. Israel has had only one Arab Cabinet minister before: Salah Tarif, a Druse, who was appointed in 2001 and forced to resign nine months later under a cloud of corruption allegations.... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16854543/

No let-up as Gaza factions fight |
Gunmen from rival Palestinian factions are continuing to trade fire in the Gaza Strip as their deadly power struggle shows no sign of abating. Gunfire and exploding grenades could be heard in Gaza City early on Sunday. Fighting between the governing Hamas faction and its political rival, Fatah, has left at least 22 dead since Thursday, the worst violence in months. The clashes have halted attempts to hold talks on forming a Palestinian national unity government. Witnesses said Sunday morning saw further clashes in Gaza's densely populated streets, but there were no immediate reports of casualties. In the latest violence, a bomb blast damaged the house of a bodyguard working for Fatah strongman Mohammed Dahlan. Overnight, five more people died, including a young boy who was hit during a shootout between Hamas and Fatah in the northern Gaza Strip. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6306903.stm
