EU gives Montenegro hope of deal |
The European Union has told Montenegro there will be no shortcut to membership, but that a key agreement could be concluded by the end of 2006. Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn said it was possible to reach a "stability and association agreement" this year. He was speaking after talks with Montenegrin leader Milo Djukanovic, who says his country could fulfil all joining conditions in a few years. It is his first trip abroad since Montenegro voted for independence. Serbia and Montenegro had been holding talks with Brussels on a stabilisation and association agreement (SAA) - seen as the first step to joining the EU. That was put on hold earlier this month, after the EU said Serbia had failed to fully co-operate with the United Nations' international war crimes tribunal by arresting Bosnian Serb fugitive Ratko Mladic. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/5027202.stm

Israel says Jerusalem Hamas members risk expulsion |
Israel plans to revoke the Jerusalem residency of four Palestinians aligned with Hamas and force them to move to the occupied West Bank unless they quit their organization, an Israeli cabinet minister said on Monday. Speaking on Israel's Channel 2 television, Interior Minister Ronnie Bar-On said he had sent letters to Palestinian lawmakers on Monday giving them 30 days to either quit Hamas, or membership of the Palestinian parliament or risk being expelled. Islamic militant group Hamas's charter calls for the destruction of the Jewish state, prompting the United States and its allies to cut off aid to the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority to pressure the group to renounce violence and recognize Israel. "Either resign or else you will not live among us ... I sent out the letters today and these will be delivered by hand and they have 30 days to make their decisions," Baron said.... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060529/ts_nm/mideast_jerusalem_hamas_dc

A car bomb Monday killed four people — including a CBS News cameraman and sound man and a U.S. soldier — and seriously injured a correspondent for the network in one of a series of bombings that left at least 33 people dead. It was the worst wave of violence to hit Baghdad in days. CBS said that veteran cameraman Paul Douglas, 48, and soundman James Brolan, 42, were killed, while correspondent Kimberly Dozier, 39, was seriously injured. They were reporting on patrol with the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, when their convoy came under attack, the network said. The U.S. military also said a U.S. soldier and an Iraqi contractor were killed, and 6 U.S. soldiers were injured when the car bomb struck the patrol. There were conflicting reports about whether the car was moving or parked when it exploded. Police said the attack occurred just before noon in Tahariyat Square, a mixed area in south-central Baghdad. The blast collapsed the front end of their armored Humvee. ... http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/iraq/2006-05-29-iraq_x.htm?csp=34
