In the Lincoln Bedroom, Bush likes to show off one of the most treasured historical artifacts in the White House, a handwritten copy of Abraham Lincoln's 1863 Gettysburg Address. The building's walls speak of past battles, victories, defeats, heartache. President George Washington's portrait hangs in the Oval Office. Civil War Commander and two-term President Ulysses Grant is placed in Bush's private study. The Queen's Bedroom offers memories of Winston Churchill, who stayed there before and after World War Two, as Bush told C-SPAN, "waddling around … with a cigar in one hand, a brandy in the other, demanding attention." As Bush marks the Presidents Day holiday and George Washington's 275th birthday on Monday, he faces a drumbeat a criticism for the event that will likely be a big part of his legacy — the Iraq war.... http://abcnews.go.com censor News |

Baghdad car bombs leave 60 dead It has also been revealed that two US soldiers were killed while on patrol in Baghdad |
At least 60 people have been killed and 131 injured in two car bombs in a Shia district of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, police sources have said. The blasts ripped through a market in the city's New Baghdad area. Two people died in another blast in Sadr City. The attacks are the deadliest since a joint US-Iraqi security offensive was launched on Wednesday. Earlier Iraq began reopening border crossings with Iran and Syria closed as part of the crackdown, officials said. The borders had been closed for three days. A large plume of smoke could be seen rising over New Baghdad, an area attacked frequently in the past, following two blasts at the open-air market. One hit vegetable stalls, and a second shortly afterwards detonated near a row of electrical goods shops, AFP news agency said. "Where is the security plan?" shouted grieving relatives outside one of the city's hospital, as dead and injured were transported to the emergency room. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6373213.stm

At Least 23 Bombs Explode in Southern Thailand, Killing 3 and Wounding More Than 50 |
At least 23 bombs exploded Sunday in apparently coordinated attacks in parts of southern Thailand plagued by a Muslim insurgency, killing three people and wounding more than 50, the military said. The bombings targeted electricity transmitters, hotels, karaoke bars and markets in the country's southernmost provinces, the only parts of predominantly Buddhist Thailand with Muslim majorities. Two schools were torched. Violence in the south has been escalating in recent months despite a major policy shift by the military-imposed government, which is trying to replace an earlier, iron-fisted approach in dealing with the rebels with a "hearts and minds" campaign. More than 2,000 people have died in the provinces bordering Malaysia since the insurgency erupted in 2004, fueled by accusations of decades of misrule by the central government.... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=2885155

Planning Seen in Iraqi Attacks on U.S. Copters |
Documents captured from Iraqi insurgents indicate that some of the recent fatal attacks against American helicopters are a result of a carefully planned strategy to focus on downing coalition aircraft, one that American officials say has been carried out by mounting coordinated assaults with machine guns, rockets and surface-to-air missiles. The documents, said to have been drafted by Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia, show that the militants were preparing to “concentrate on the air force.” The contents of the documents are described in an American intelligence report that was reviewed by The New York Times. Seized near Baghdad, the documents reflect the insurgents’ military preparations from late last year, including plans for attacking aircraft using a variety of weapons. Officials say they are a fresh indication that the United States is facing an array of “adaptive” adversaries in Iraq, enemies who are likely to step up their attacks as American forces expand their efforts to ... http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/18/world/middleeast/18helicopter.html?ex=1329454800&en=be728c7f06c2b481&ei=5090&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss

US shock at Iraq helicopter toll |
THE shocking toll of six American helicopters shot down in Iraq within three weeks has sparked a Pentagon inquiry into the use of surface-to-air (Sam) missiles against the aircraft. “Is there a concern? Yes, there is definitely a concern,” said a Pentagon official about the helicopter downings. “Are we looking at it closely? You bet.” Air power is crucial to American military strategy in Iraq — roads have become too dangerous to travel along because of roadside bombs that can penetrate even the armour of a US Abrams battle tank. The shooting down of six helicopters with the loss of 27 lives is an unprecedented success for the Iraqi insurgency, and coincides with the “surge” operation of increased American troops in Baghdad backed up by Iraqi police and army. The latest security clampdown follows two unsuccessful operations, Operation Together Forward I and Operation Together Forward II, both aimed at retaking Baghdad neighbourhoods. ... http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article1400657.ece

Georgia revisits legal restrictions on illegal aliens |
There have been no protests on the steps of the Georgia Capitol like those that greeted the state's sweeping immigration legislation last year. But quietly, and in piecemeal fashion, state lawmakers have been working around the edges to crack down again on aliens in the country illegally. Georgia made international headlines last spring when it passed some of the toughest laws in the U.S. targeting illegal aliens within its borders. Those laws included provisions to sanction employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens and deny some state services -- such as nonemergency medical care and unemployment checks -- to adults who can't verify that they're in the country legally. ... http://www.washingtontimes.com/national/20070217-115157-8375r.htm
