Top Department of Homeland Security officials were told that New Orleans' levees were breached the day that Hurricane Katrina roared ashore, former disaster chief Michael Brown said Friday, contradicting previous statements by agency officials who said they did not know the levees were toppling until the next day. "I find it a little disingenuous," Brown, who at the time headed the Federal Emergency Management Agency, told a Senate oversight committee. "For them to claim that we didn't have awareness of it is just baloney." Brown also told senators that decisions and policies by the parent Homeland Security Department doomed FEMA to "a path to failure" that led to the government's slow response to the storm. He said that because of a focus on terrorism, natural disasters "had become the stepchild of the Department of Homeland Security." ... http://www.cbsnews.com censor News |

Bush wins deal on anti-terror law. Fear of the Boogieman wins over freedom again |
Key US senators have agreed to back a controversial anti-terror law which the Bush administration has spent months struggling to have renewed. The Patriot Act gave the government new powers to investigate terror suspects after the 11 September 2001 attacks. Civil libertarians in both parties have objected to some measures, which were due to expire at the end of 2005 and had been only temporarily extended. The White House has now agreed to changes making renewal almost certain. President Bush on Thursday outlined details of what he called a terrorist plot to attack Los Angeles, which he said had been derailed by international law enforcement in 2002. They call it the” Patriotic Act” and the foolish fall for the name trick, that’s how the traitors in Government who push this Treasonous Bill win. For Gods sake people start to think where this crap is leading this country and get rid of these Traitors. Put your Country before blind party loyalty...... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4699564.stm

Nigeria confirms bird flu spread |
The deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu has been found on three more farms in northern Nigeria, where thousands of poultry have died recently. Officials said tests had confirmed bird flu on farms in two different states to where Africa's first case of bird flu was confirmed on Wednesday. Chickens have been dying in Nigeria for a month, leading to fears that the virus may have spread widely. The government says it has now imposed a quarantine on the affected farms. Large-scale culls of poultry have also begun. The World Health Organization has called for a massive public education campaign, to stop bird flu from spreading to humans in Nigeria. "The single most important public health priority at this stage is to warn people about the dangers of close contact with sick or dead birds infected with H5N1," a WHO statement said.... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/4700264.stm

Twelve militants and seven Russian policemen have died in a clash in the southern Stavropol region, Russian security officials say. The fighting erupted on Thursday in Tukui-Mekteb, a village just north of Chechnya in the North Caucasus. According to Russian media reports, the militants had seized two houses. Hostilities flared up again in Chechnya in 1999 and Russia has refused to negotiate with the separatist rebels who want independence. On Friday up to 300 police officers and elite troops surrounded and then stormed a house in the village where the rebels were holed up, Russian security officials said. Earlier, several policemen had died in a clash with the rebels. Villagers were evacuated when the fighting erupted on Thursday. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4700492.stm
